Default Ethics in a harsher world

I have a question for you all.

If you were living in an area like the Swat Valley and were intimidated to join ranks with the militia men else your family would be target and perhaps slaughtered, would you?

Then, if you were required to kill innocent people for their sake would you?

Sitting in a position of security the choices are easy to make and condemn, but I think it would be alot harder for them...

harder to be good, harder to die, and by extension let those around you die you care for for the sake of the good.
