Hydrogen would be wonderful as an energy intermediate, as long as it's not meant to be a transportation fuel. Christina, I also spent a good part of the 2000's working on hydrogen. Funny how the hydrogen research bubble, a lesson in the dangers of letting the narrative get out of control (fuel cells mentioned in the state of the union address!), did accomplish one thing: it trained half a generation of energy scientists.

I think there's also a lesson in there about how to talk to science journalists, like how to keep the wizzbang under control. Science journalism (i.e. communication) is simultaneously the most valuable resource of and greatest danger to science.
