I enjoyed the reference to Borges as John and George pushed back against "thick description." If anyone is interested, another Borges story that is along the same line is "Funes the Memorious." There, a man with an incredible memory creates a new numbering system where each number is replaced with a word. Of course, he winds up with "numbers" that are completely unrelated to one another and provide no useful system for thought. As Borges puts it, "thinking is forgetting differences, generalizing, working in the abstract."
