Default WaPo seeks new 'pundit'

You knew they'd have to replace Dan Froomkin eventually.

Heh. At $200/wk, they aren't likely to replace Froomkin.

Thanks for passing this along, though.

[Added] Sad that they're asking for opionating instead of reporting, but ... again, at $200/wk, I guess you get what you pay for.

Indeed. Though if they're seeking a 400 word column, then 200 bucks a piece is 50 cents a word, which is what a lot of people will pay someone who's publishing for the first time.

I wouldn't rule out the possibility that WaPo is hiring some reporters too, but those jobs seem to be advertised by word-of-mouth to insiders.

That is depressing. I used to get 1 dollar/word from airline magazines 15 years ago. And that didn't require any thinking.

Good point. The possibility of getting a foot in the door, of course, also makes this not unattractive.

Go for it. Surely we can drum up some fans from the BHTV site to vote for you enthusiastically once your column appears in the contest.

Heh. Thanks. Maybe, if I can come up with an idea.

[Added] Although when I think about who else might be reading ... ;^)

That rate may still stand in the trade mags--they often pay more than the generals, because generalists are much easier to come by--and therefore less valuable--than niche experts.

No, I'm talking about general articles about whatever. For example, I once did an interview with Paul Newman for the United Airlines in-flight mag. $1/word. All I had to do for that one was transcribe. Newspapers always paid shitty. I did a couple of op eds for the SF Chronicle and the Indianapolis whatever, and they paid like $75 each!!!

I gave up on freelancing when I pitched a story to Good Housekeeping about a group of volunteers who would rush to accident scenes to comfort the victims' families. Basically, only "women's" mags ran "human interest" stories back then. Anyway, this was also before anyone was properly trained to help families of grotesque accidents or murder victims. GH was all set to buy the story, but they wanted to make sure the lead volunteer was "photogenic." I said, What do you mean by 'photogenic?'" and she replied, "You know, good hair and not fat." That's when I decided to keep my day job (teaching).

Right, but my impression is that these niche trade pubs always paid higher than general interest newspapers BECAUSE the bulk of their articles are subject-specific and so the outfit's per-word rate is set on that basis, even if it ends up applying to the occasional general article, like yours.

Truth be told, right after you posted this, I tried to encourage someone else to go for it (partly just to torment him). This post is worth reading, particularly with that in mind.

But! Another possibility rears its head.
