Re: They're All Bullies and Whores (Emily Bazelon & Ann Althouse)
What is all this causal claptrap? It would be nice if what Althouse said actually obtained-that Evangelicals didn't think of or address homosexuals as a class to be stigmatized and condemned, because they're sinners just like the rest of us. Only a person who doesn't pay attention to what actually happens in the world could believe that. Surely you guys have seen the shit I'm talking about-my favorite is the picture of the wedding cake with two grooms on it, with that nefarious suggestion that something just *must* be wrong with the state of affairs that signifies. I won't say conservative Christians invented homophobia, in some ways they're just trying to exploit something that's already present in the fabric of society. And gay bashing is a venerable childhood tradition that may operate mostly independently of theological encouragement (not so sure about that though). But there are plenty of idiots who aren't even particularly religious who are nevertheless emboldened in their cruelty because they know there's not just a justification for their gut intolerance, but one that's biblically backed. Hatred of homosexuality is fundamentally a norm. Every person who participates in it, whether their reasons are religious or not, contributes to the norm. Christian homophobia is the most reprehensible kind, both because it's the most organized, and because it's cloaked in the garb righteousness.
