http://www.latimes.com/news/nationwo...,4495613.story Sad, to be sure -- and another example of the homogenization of the American landscape? Of course, there's something desperate about all of those braying signs that line the South Dakota landscape. VISIT ME! VISIT ME! WORLD'S LARGEST BALE OF HAY!! Only 498 miles to Wall Drug! They're clearly artificial tourist attractions -- yet what could be more Authentic Americana than that? A motelier in SD told me his parents used to see Lawrence Welk at the Corn Palace. The popcorn on sale there is delicious by the way. |
