ABBA had a godawful presence, scrubbed and smiling: Donny and Marie from northern Europe. Their songs are surprisingly strong, though, actually pretty sophisticated exercises in songwriting. I realized this a few years ago when I heard somebody performing unadorned voice+acoustic guitar versions of a few of their hits. It was a little shocking when I realized why what I was listening to (and enjoying) was so familiar.
