Obviously I disagree with you (and I see no reason whatsoever for language like "snarky" and "silly").

My counter-factual scenario has to suppose that moderate/loyalist opinion is better organized in the early 1770s than it was - that is given. My point is that the republican patriots frustrated attempts to find a moderate compromise with Westminster.

Your reference to the Olive Branch Peition seems to me to make the point for me - Adams' famous letter rejecting it and the possibility of a peaceful settlement was probably intended for public consumption, and it served its purpose perfectly once it was known and read in London. In other words, Adams scuttled the Petition - just as Jefferson attempted to do by using inflammatory language in the Petition's original draft, but was blocked when Dickinson succeeded in having the document revised.
