For those that missed it, last night's The Daily Show consisted entirely of a 30-minute interview with the president. You can watch it here
. Most of the interview consisted of Stewart putting forward his version of the standard liberal critique of Obama, and Obama defending his administration, his accomplishments, and the necessity of people voting for Democrats on Tuesday.
What I found really fascinating, however, was what wasn't in the interview. Neither Jon nor Obama once mentioned Iraq, Afghanistan, Guantanamo, or drone strikes. On the one hand, this is pretty reasonable: the major issues in this election cycle have to do with the economy and, to a lesser extent, the corruption of our political process, On the basis of his earlier shows, I also suspect Jon was more interested in grilling Obama on those issues. But it still seemed like an odd omission, particularly since the progressive critique of Obama is so much more damning in these areas. I wonder if they agreed beforehand to avoid certain topics, and if so, which ones.
