Re: concerning Richard Dawkins
High-status international atheist powwows apparently take place, leaving edifying youtube videos in their wake for us, the apathetic faithless. A strong feminist call to attention has dropped of late, asking for more gender balance in the status-apportionment (in this case equating to microphone-time). I consider it possible they have a kernel of truth--that women were too often expected to be mediocre thinkers, making it harder to distinguish themselves, and ascend, within atheist organizations, and that this problem to some degree persists. We are probably less free of gender bias that we rate ourselves. So I can accept that some things might need to be done, to address gender unfairness, though proposals for ameliorating the situation cannot themselves be deemed above criticism.
A driving force within atheism's mingling with feminism has been PZ Myers, an atheist milanter-still than Richard Dawkins, though while Dawkins embraces a sometimes-snooty bourgeois liberalism, Myers is a highly partisan ultraliberal Democrat. For a man to maintain a credible identity as an engaged, strong liberal Democrat, in Minnesota, he must proclaim the feminist pieties with sufficient frequency and enthusiasm that his audience is convinced he's a genuine believer. Imposter-hunting inevitably becomes a cottage industry. PZ is a true believer, and--with predictable zeal--reflexively took Watson's side during elevatorgate.
