I don't think it's an either/or kind of situation. The smart move is to meet people where they're at and speak the language that will reach them. In the midst of that process, people can also be encouraged to think in more depth about issues and taught how to expect more accurate information and be engaged in more active decision making. But the key is to have people's interest and attention first, otherwise no one (or just a few) will be listening to the message. Also providing a dose of optimism and possible solutions makes the delivery of bad news more tolerable.
Agreed, as long as we respect other views and build bridges rather than simply manipulate others into accepting our point of view.
