Default batman

The comment that Dark Knight and all movies about vigilantism are profoundly conservative is profoundly uninformed. All super heroes are about vigilantism in that, if the forces of law and order were working well, there would be no need for superheroes. But the super heros in the movies today - especially Batman - were created in the the wake of the Depression and usually by socially liberal writers and artists. To read post 911 conversatism into the Dark Knight or to attribute its success to that feeling is just wrong. Dark Knight is part of the long standing superhero tradition and its success is due to the fact that its a great movie.

And the reason that anti-Iraq War movies failed at the box office is that they weren't good movies. Lions for Lambs was the worst movie I've seen in years and In the Valley of Elah, while a mildly entertaining who-dun-it had a plot premise (that the Iraq War was a war unlike any other war, so horrific that, for the first time in military history, soldiers were now willing to kill their comrades in arms) that was insanely preposterous.
