Also, I'm quite amazed at the emotional level this conversation has risen to. This topic of right and left seems to get everybody going. I wonder if there needs to be some kind of substantive discussion of what those terms actually mean.
I'll throw out one definition which might start the conversation.
I think conservatives believe that the individual is more often than not better suited to make decisions about the way things should be. They also believe that markets are the best determiners. Further, conservatives are wary of any kind of collectivism. That is probably why they are also wary of government intervention. They also believe in personal responsibility and that bailouts of any kind send the wrong message and discourage people to be careful about their decisions.
And I guess to wrap it up, I don't think the republican party represents conservative principles, although it makes that claim.
