So Bernard is broadly skeptical of the US getting more involved in the Gulf's security. While Habiba signals agreement, the skepticism she articulates really is limited to the level of implementation and execution. I would have liked for Bernard challenge Habiba a bit more on that score, and get her to elaborate on the "existential threats" she hints at. I get it that small Gulf states want the US to pick up the tab for their security, but it's far from clear to me that this is a good deal for the US.

Why can't the Saudis defend themselves, Bernard asks, despite the billions and billions they spend on American weapons?

Because they are obese and because they expect Americans to defend them? But... aren't most Americans obese too?

Excellent discussion.

It is difficult to imagine how Saudi Arabia and the other Gulf States can evolve into democracies when the "citizens" pay no taxes, when indeed they are paid to obey and keep their mouths shut. As long as oil flows abundantly I am afraid despotism (theocracy) is the only government possible in SA.
