Sorry to nitpick your math, Jamelle, but progressives can't possibly be "20 percent of the public at large and a quarter of the Democratic Party", unless the Democrats hold 80 percent of the general public.
If I recall correctly, people who identify themselves as Democrats are currently at about 30%. If hard-line progressives are a 1/4 minority of the Democratic Party, that makes them more like about 7.5% of the American public. (Assuming my hasty napkin-scratched calculations are about right.)
