Not only would this free up those who are locked up for merely consuming or selling drugs, but it would also put a stop to the alarming amount of turf-war violence which would no longer be financially incentivized once the black market for drugs is gone. You can't seriously talk about high US incarceration rates nor high US crime statistics without facing up to the fact that the drug war is responsible for most of it.
