Re: Values Added: Moral Authority (Daniel Schultz & Mark Kleiman)
Daniel asks, "How do we get back to a situation where our leaders have the moral authority they need?"
Then Mark delineates the time when leaders began to lose their moral authority as Watergate. These two then bemoan the state of journalistic muckraking and posit that if politicians think that they will be accused of lying, that encourages lying.
There is no good time to get back to. I think it's best that we don't trust our leaders. Well, maybe we can trust, but then always be prepared to verify. Leaders have never been completely trustworthy. This is the human condition and part of a democracy where we actually chose those who lead us.
