Re: LOL

Why have there been no comments for three days? Must all comments be posted below the diavlog now? Or do we now all finally agree on everything? http://brainwaveweb.com/forum/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: LOL

It's good to know I got the wrong impression on that. I was half way making light of it anyway - but it's not the proper topic for such treatment.

Re: LOL

Yeah I think it is. Fascinating website.

Re: LOL

I grew up in the South from age seven through fifteen. I lived where it was "honorable" to be racist - yet coming from the north I had little or no previous exposure to those social behavior-shaping...

Re: LOL

Great way to wake up this morning. Checked BHTV first thing and there's your idea-rich comment. While thinking about it I made the coffee and fed the cat - and so now I can get into...

Re: LOL

This is a great discussion IMO. I've been trying to get a grasp on it in terms of my own views and this part of your comment gave me a kick - if you don't mind me using it as a jump off point. I'm...

"Plain language" for handle:

Own your stuff - also means taking responsibility for your own sloppy thinking / writing.

There are several members here who's comments I usually have to re-read...

Re: Glenn Loury & Walter Russell Mead

I only write what I honestly believe to be true.

Re: Values Added: The Whirligig of Time (Glenn Loury & Walter Russell Mead)

I'd say my opinion on this since doing my research is amplified. Loury believes the creation of Israel was a travesty (nabka) and so while he attempts to avoid that question when confronted with it...

Re: Values Added: The Whirligig of Time (Glenn Loury & Walter Russell Mead)

Re: #147, I realize you are not likely to take advice from me but your comments would be far easier to follow if you simply include the "reply to" pointer code some place near the top of your...

Re: Values Added: The Whirligig of Time (Glenn Loury & Walter Russell Mead)

Re: My previous comment:

And like most things in life - they are far more complex than at first imagined. I've spent the morning reading about Glenn Loury, first out of simple curiosity, but now...

Re: Values Added: The Whirligig of Time (Glenn Loury & Walter Russell Mead)

To expand on this just a bit. Loury illustrates this disconnect from reality very well. He said (paraphrasing) don't Americans see that the Arabs have all the oil and perhaps we'd be better off doing...

Re: Values Added: The Whirligig of Time (Glenn Loury & Walter Russell Mead)

If I may offer a suggestion (in support of your comment I think). Since 9/11 I suspect that more Americans have been more interested in this topic and have been reading and listening to more...

Re: Lessons Learned: Beyond Good and Evil (Robert Wright & Alan Wolfe)

Don't worry. I'll be sure to insert several less-well-educated comments before then.

I watched the 1st diavlog w/ Haidt and am 2/3 through the second. This is cool stuff....

Re: Lessons Learned: Beyond Good and Evil (Robert Wright & Alan Wolfe)

Thanks for this. I'm 12 minutes into the first Haidt diavlog and stopped long enough to download "The Happiness Hypothesis" to my Kindle account. Hope to compare more opinions with you in some future...

Re: Lessons Learned: Beyond Good and Evil (Robert Wright & Alan Wolfe)

I remember that now. Sorry I missed it on your last comment.

Yes, I think that explains a lot. What line of reasoning - or path of discovery - led you to this view if I could ask? Are there...

Re: Lessons Learned: Beyond Good and Evil (Robert Wright & Alan Wolfe)

I see in your reply what I call cognicentrism. This is the belief that we humans effectively have two brains; an emotional brain that follows our primitive desires and an improved cognitive brain...

Re: Lessons Learned: Beyond Good and Evil (Robert Wright & Alan Wolfe)

But is that not the same as saying that we always choose the goal that we value most - at that moment of decision? And why would that not be a "natural impulse"?

Re: Lessons Learned: Beyond Good and Evil (Robert Wright & Alan Wolfe)

Thanks, that helps. For me, if organisms can "know" something then that implies there's an evolutionary purpose for knowing. I see that evolutionary purpose as facilitating organisms with brains in...

Re: Lessons Learned: Beyond Good and Evil (Robert Wright & Alan Wolfe)

OK - I've gone to several links now in my attempts to expand my knowledge on these topics. I'm afraid that again, by about the third paragraph of whatever I'm reading, I am overwhelmed by the sheer...

Re: Lessons Learned: Beyond Good and Evil (Robert Wright & Alan Wolfe)

Ray is not resisting that terminology or the basic argument. He has no idea what it means. He tried to learn something about philosophy once and even passed an undergrad survey course long ago. But...

Re: Lessons Learned: Beyond Good and Evil (Robert Wright & Alan Wolfe)

I agree with this. I could have made that clearer. We will attempt to apply reason to parts of those questions I'm sure. I think what happens is that to the extent we trust our "reasoned" conclusions...

Re: Lessons Learned: Beyond Good and Evil (Robert Wright & Alan Wolfe)

Or how does one decide what profession to pursue - or whether to ask a particular person to marry you - or if a young newlywed should decide to stay home to raise her kids and give up a long dreamed...

Re: Lessons Learned: Beyond Good and Evil (Robert Wright & Alan Wolfe)

Your concerns are similar to Stephanie's so I'll try to respond to both of you here. I apologize for not being able to make myself clear so far on this point. I suspect my problem has been that I'm...

Re: Lessons Learned: Beyond Good and Evil (Robert Wright & Alan Wolfe)

I don't want to create the impression that I see myself as some great thinker who has all this stuff worked out - and therefore I see it as my mission to "enlighten the masses". I do find these...
