Question to the Prof

Professor Althouse:

What's your professional take on causation? How would you advise a defense attorney to represent Loughner? Or, Palin, in a free speech case? Do you think the "harm principle"...

Re: Uprising in Tunisia (Shadi Hamid & Issandr El Amrani)

Good points - as well as bjkeefe's on nostalgia - about democracy promotion. That was one nagging discussion I keep returning to. What are the external and internal causes of democratization? Can we...

Re: Uprising in Tunisia (Shadi Hamid & Issandr El Amrani)

I agree wholeheartedly. I want more of this sort of diavlog.

Re: Tease Away (Glenn Loury & Ann Althouse)

AemJeff's speech, even if it were "nonsensical, convoluted" (which it is isn't), could not be considered illegal by the standards of either the harm principle or offense principle, but Palin's can.

Re: Tease Away (Glenn Loury & Ann Althouse)

You're conveniently confusing a legal defense of Loughner for a moral or causal one. As a matter of fact, it's hard to argue that Palin wasn't the proximate cause of Loughner's behavior.

The Beck without the Twist

It's rich when Carroll purports to criticize Palin. It reminds me of the Beck habit of tossing out an outrageous claim, and then walking it back, only to return to it later. Carroll does the first...

Re: The Week in Blog: Take a Breath (Bill Scher & Conn Carroll)

These are empirical claims about Jefferson. You can prove them if you like. There might be an award-winning, best-selling book in it.

Out of Bounds?

I sat back and watched and listened to this debate this time. Instead, I re-read my blog posts from the period the last time a similar incident, the Seung Hui Cho shootings at Virginia Tech....

Re: Islam, Terrorism, and Justin Bieber (Matt Duss & Daveed Gartenstein-Ross)

Actually, factions within the Japanese Army and government had already informed the US government through back channels, that it would agree to surrender IF the US allowed Japan to keep the Imperial...

Re: Everything is political in a bad society

So, it doesn't matter what one says, any rhetoric is allowed! Then. why don't we just SHUT UP and allow the family three days to mourn - I'm sure we'll argue over a proper mourning period, too....

Re: The Shooting of Gabrielle Giffords (Mark Schmitt & Daniel Foster)

Actually, I think Greg Sargent is pitch perfect in this blog post (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/plum-line/2011/01/gabrielle_giffords_shooting.html). It's rare that I read an article or blog and...

Re: Eyes Wide Open (David Corn & James Pinkerton)

They would enter the budget debate by informing themselves of CBO estimates, which they could fact check. At that point they would inform their respective representatives how to vote based not on...

Education Isn't Everything

This was a very informative diavlog, and I hope both will return to complete their discussion. As for the question of the direction of reform, I think there's another debate Americans need before...

Two Cents' Worth

Firstly, I'd like to hear more about "kumon" from Unit. I'm not aware of the methodology by name, but perhaps I've seen it practiced in Busan as well.

Secondly, and this comes from someone who was...

Re: Eyes Wide Open (David Corn & James Pinkerton)

I think this all misses the point. The Congressional Budget Office's purpose is to restore balance between the presidential and congressional branches. Both Theodore Lowi and Bruce Ackerman...

The Daley Era

Did I hear right? Did both Corn and Pinkerton agree - from different ends of the ideological spectrum - that politics is a pragmatic game, not an ideological crusade? Has Bill Daley and the "Chicago...

Re: Loury vs. Lowry (Glenn Loury & Rich Lowry)

Let me defend the left end of the spectrum and meet the libertarians halfway: let Glenn do what he wants. Free Glenn! There's no reason to keep him in a ghetto! More Glenn, yes! Glenn with other...

Re: The $14.5 Trillion Dollar Question (Adam Serwer & Dan Drezner)

I was really disappointed with this diavlog.

Two quick remarks:

1. Wikileaks is not a media organization, or a network of spies. It's for whistle-blowers. It's about making whistle-blowing an...

Re: A New Global Player (Julia Sweig & Matias Spektor)

Sweig's notion of "parallel play" struck me as a novel insight. Until, that is, I read this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallel_play) on Wikipedia:

I don't know if this is what Sweig was...

Re: Recipe for a great diavlog

You forgot Hurlburt/Drezner! But, yes, this was a great diavlog after a lot of dreck.

What I got from this diavlog was a strong primer in the US constitution's history, and an appreciation for how...

I think you're alluding to another aspect of this debate that's a bit disconcerting but still relevant. Another reason to rid ourselves of these fossil weapons is their budget-busting potential....

When you consider the effort that has to go into confirming treaties like START and passing bills, yes, I agree that the outcome is paltry compared to the hopes entertained by their proponents. This...

Re: The Year in Politics (Ben Smith & Dave Weigel)

No, I disagree. It's not that I dispute the facts about pensions. It's that I think that military spending and subsidies put structural reforms front and center in a way pension reform doesn't. But,...

And, I don't want you to think that I think you're an idiot. But, the US has negotiated with Seoul to withdraw, and Seoul has requested a delay. And, in another sense, too, it's in Seoul's hands. It...
