Re: What People Know About Drugs is Wrong (John McWhorter & Mark Kleiman)

I'd recommend The Economics of Prohibition as a companion piece offering a different perspective (and making my points better and more substantively than I am likely to do in this format):...

Re: What People Know About Drugs is Wrong (John McWhorter & Mark Kleiman)

I'm not saying that they substitute for each other--people who would use heroin are not using inhalants because they're cheaper and legal. I am saying that they exhibit the same demand dynamics:...

Re: What People Know About Drugs is Wrong (John McWhorter & Mark Kleiman)

The claim is that the number of users of currently illicit narcotics will skyrocket if it is legalized and the price drops. The rate of usage of inhalants, which are legal to attain and very cheap,...

Re: What People Know About Drugs is Wrong (John McWhorter & Mark Kleiman)

Here's the data on inhalant abuse:
http://www.nida.nih.gov/drugpages/inhalants.html

2.1 million Americans, out of 300 million. 3.8 million Americans have used heroin...

Re: What People Know About Drugs is Wrong (John McWhorter & Mark Kleiman)

The problem with his thinking is that people aren't avoiding using the drugs in question because they're illegal or because they're too expensive--they're not using them because it's very stupid to...

Re: The Tea Party Finally Has It's Candidate!!!

I guess since BJ is no longer posting, UE feels the urge to fill his illogical, splenetic shoes.

Re: Charges against DSK to be dismissed. When will Nafissatou Diallo be deported?

Heh. If only. Unfortunately going after low-level grifters doesn't offer near as much political return as going after high-ranking officials of certain less-popular European countries.

Re: Circle of Protection

I don't think context really matters all that much. That's trying to place people into a much larger picture than to which they actually belong.

So, say for instance, a white man makes two...

Here's an article about the perp walk, inspired by the DSK case:

Re: Charges against DSK to be dismissed. When will Nafissatou Diallo be deported?

I'm more concerned with the DA than Diallo. Diallo was plainly a low-level grifter; the DA should've been able to recognize that and pretty clearly doesn't possess the wisdom and temperament to do...

Re: Libertarianism: A Scam

Yes, but my point was that this is not very far. In fact, I don't think it's far at all. Most people understand that methamphetamine is very harmful and will not use it no matter its legality; those...

Re: Education spending in Japan

I find your obsession with documenting past interactions to be a little bizarre. Maybe you should relax some and concentrate on ideas.

I do however share your praise of Stephanie for being willing...

Re: Education spending in Japan

If I am on the same page as you in regards to the "problem", then I wouldn't include myself in that category either. Major reform is a significant step but the best results won't be achieved until...

Re: Education spending

Oh I'm willing to compromise on other, lesser legislation--a hybrid public/private system, for example. But that doesn't change that I think that a fully privatized system would be the most efficient.

Re: Education spending

I value privacy so I prefer not to say. I do wish that you would stick to talking about ideas instead of fulminating moralism.

Re: Libertarianism: A Scam

Actually Portugal found that when they decriminalized narcotics, abuse rates dropped. It's not the first time something of the sort happened. Check out the Economics of Prohibition:...

Re: Education spending

It certainly seemed that the Democratic controlled Congress and Barack Obama didn't want vouchers, at least in DC, did it not?

Sure, there are Democrats who are in favor of school reform....

They're not widely available--that's why they have lotteries to get into them. There are far fewer than the demand for them, and Democrats work to ensure this will continue. For an example of this,...

Re: Education spending in Japan

It is unions that sell the lie that children need to be in small classes in order to learn. It is also, at least partially, unions that sell the notion that we need ESL classes--I don't think we do....

Re: Education spending in Japan

I think the part I bolded is key. In America we have a silly belief, peddled by the corrupt teachers unions, that we need tons of money to educate children--that's why funding per students has risen...

Re: Getting into a Good Mood (Robert Wright & Mickey Kaus)

At this point I'm fairly skeptical of a payout. The information about the accuser keeps getting worse and worse, and it's conceivable at this point that she could end up in prison herself. I'm...

More revelations in the DSK case

I really wish I'd have shorted the DSK conviction...
