Re: Values Added: Winter Is Coming (Michelle Goldberg & Conn Carroll)

Not quite what I was trying to communicate.

Re: Values Added: Winter Is Coming (Michelle Goldberg & Conn Carroll)

This 1% changes year to year. People fall into and out of the 1% all the time. Not to mention a lot of the 1% are doctors and lawyers. Just read Thomas Sowell on this point.

If you don't have the...

Re: Where Fun Goes To Die (Harold Pollack & Donald H. Taylor)

I think mostly everyone agrees that government price controls drove employers to start offering insurance. And that insurance gets its own tax breaks. This has caused costs to be hidden from...

Re: Lentils vs. iPhone Edition (Benjy Sarlin & Katherine Mangu-Ward)

I'm not a Ron Paul person, but I think people on this board should look at the effects of our monetary system as the cause of much of what they are complaining about, not some systemic grand policy....

Re: Values Added: All About Michele (Ryan Lizza & Ramesh Ponnuru)

If Schaefer Jr's pizza arrives late he has a tendency to attribute it to a desire among Christians to establish some Taliban-like dictatorship.

Re: Development of the WWW - a Challenge to government hating revisionists

I'm a free market guy, and I think you raise a very important point.

Free markets aren't perfect because people aren't perfect. If people make a bunch of stupid decisions (housing bubble, tech...

Re: Values Added: Parallel Knowledge Systems (Michelle Goldberg & Michael Dougherty)

She wasn't on the court but she was an activist fully engaged in the pro-choice movement.

Regarless of her changing her mind, her quote shows the impulse in that movement. It's pretty easy to slip...

Re: Values Added: Parallel Knowledge Systems (Michelle Goldberg & Michael Dougherty)

Ruth Badder Ginsburg admitted that eugenics was a factor in the Roe v Wade decision.

“Frankly I had thought that at the time [Roe v. Wade] was decided,” Ginsburg told her interviewer, Emily...

Re: Values Added: Christians for Marriage Equality (Anna Taylor Sweringen & Peter Laarman)

But there is a big difference. While we all use our reason, one group is trying to understand (at least what they think is) God's self-revelation. The other group relies primarily on their own...

Re: Values Added: Christians for Marriage Equality (Anna Taylor Sweringen & Peter Laarman)

There too many things to respond to so I'll primarily focus on this. I didn't say they deny a morality.

Traditional Christians have pulled out of the Mosaic law all sorts of moral imperatives...

Re: Values Added: Christians for Marriage Equality (Anna Taylor Sweringen & Peter Laarman)

We can get really complicated, but theological liberalism is a euphemism for unbelief. There's a spectrum of course. In terms of Protestants, you get people who don't believe in the inspiration of...

Re: Values Added: Christians for Marriage Equality (Anna Taylor Sweringen & Peter Laarman)

Isn't it always strange that when theological liberals talk about God being bigger than we can imagine and "can't fit in a box", this god of theirs always agrees with them?

This god never judges...

Re: Oligarchs, Plutocrats, and Prisoners (Joshua Cohen & Glenn Loury)

I understand what people are considering. But we have to admit that our understanding of what is constitutional or not is not based on the text of the Constitution. I don't want people to be cruel,...

Re: Oligarchs, Plutocrats, and Prisoners (Joshua Cohen & Glenn Loury)

Could someone explain when the legal phrase "cruel AND unusual" came to mean "cruel OR unusual"?

Re: Values Added: The Year in Religion (Amy Sullivan & Mollie Ziegler Hemingway)

Really? What in the Bible would support this interpretation or what in orthodox Christianity or Orthodox Judaism would automatically take violent events and make them something we should emulate for...

Re: Values Added: The Year in Religion (Amy Sullivan & Mollie Ziegler Hemingway)

I'm not sure how to clarify this any more, but I'll try.

Let's assume that the Bible contains the same exact acts of violence as the Koran. Same context. Same everything. They don't, but let's...

Re: Values Added: The Year in Religion (Amy Sullivan & Mollie Ziegler Hemingway)

I hate to be mean, but I'm doubting if you've ever studied Islam to any great extent. Maybe so, but your understanding seems superficial.

There's violence in the Bible. There's violence in...

Re: Values Added: The Year in Religion (Amy Sullivan & Mollie Ziegler Hemingway)

TwinSwords,

I think you are missing the key point here. Yes, the Bible describes bad things happening. Judaism nor Christianity don't have a theology or understanding that makes those acts binding...

Re: Values Added: The Year in Religion (Amy Sullivan & Mollie Ziegler Hemingway)

This may be hard for some to actually believe. I have read about 3/4ths of the Koran. I took a course on it under an actual expert in college (in 1994). I know about the hadith. I understand the...

Re: Values Added: The Fundamentalist Threat (Michelle Goldberg & Jeff Sharlet)

I firmly believe that no one on the Left really has a clue about the "Christian Reconstructionists", cue scary music.

Re: The Challenge of Islam (Robert Wright & Akbar Ahmed)

The fears about sharia come from two sources.

1) Europe. We see creeping sharia in Europe. Please use Google if you need examples. Honor killings, etc.

2) The M.O. of Islam is to go along to...

Re: Percontations: Artificial Intelligence and Quantum Mechanics

Philosophy is driving this. And personal preferences.

Some would rather postulate multiple worlds, even though that can't be empirically verified, because it is friendlier to their naturalism....
