Re: Words Are Wind (Robert Farley & Michael Cohen)
So US squeamishness about Japan's colonial adventures was an emotional response. Rather than put an oil embargo upon them, we should have remained friends, because that would be rational. We didn't...

Re: Economic Throwdown Edition
To paraphrase and extend Megan, if the jobs are created to vacuum up workers, and the government has to borrow their salaries, those jobs are relief. Yes, some fraction of all jobs are like this,...

Re: Economic Throwdown Edition
Megan's point about unemployment statistics wasn't that hard to understand. Had Dean accepted or bypassed it, Megan would have had time to complete her point about the experience of other...

Re: Young and Irresponsible Edition
I don't see the Phelps/Kellogg issue as that hard to understand. Kellogg gave him a pile of money because some people prefer to buy cereal featuring his picture. If anything changes cereal buyers'...

Re: Intellectuals in the Age of Obama
So Steven is amused by conservative attempts to keep their team together, given that his team agrees on all substantive issues. Has he been paying any attention to politics? Most of the shifts in...

Re: Welcome to the Jungle
I don't know enough of the relevant history, but I think law enforcement was almost entirely a state matter back then. Extradition worked when two states had similar views of a given offense.

Re: Welcome to the Jungle
If Bob could find an example of a centralized legal system backed by decentralized power, or perhaps just a feeling of legitimacy, it would help his argument.
I disagree with Megan that Bush would...

Re: The Shooting of Brian Beutler
In the historical period Ta-Nehisi refers to in Mississippi, the situation was a greatly magnified version of the one sealrock described. A white person could approach any black person and treat...

Re: The Age of Obama
I suspect John is right that peer pressure against academic achievement among middle and upper middle class blacks will be less effective now. Otherwise, I doubt that our next president's name or...

We are about to hand the presidency, along with a strong congressional majority, to a guy who sounds intelligent without saying smart things. Glenn, and others, understand that there is risk...

I used to be a hang glider pilot. Several other pilots were smokers who quit when they started flying in order to carry their glider up the hill and still breathe. They never noticed withdrawal...

This pairing is of course different from a McWhorter-Lowry session, but has some of the same virtues. They know the issues and each other well enough not to waste much time on exposition, or in...

Re: S.P.O.D. (Sarah Palin Obsession Disorder)
I held my fingers last week when Bob said that it would set a bad example to have a child concieved out of wedlock as a VP's grandchild. I figured that Bob would soon see his error, but here he is...
