Re: Worldwise: Live From Athens (Yanis Varoufakis & Henry Farrell)

YV described it all as self funding, so that the only dictate coming from faceless bureaucrats in Brussels is "Pay the debts you legitimately owe, at the low interest rates we have provided you by...

Re: Two Cheers For New Jersey! (Mark Schmitt & Kevin D. Williamson)

Corporations don't have to be good at everything in order to make Williamson's point. They only have to be better than the government monopoly. That is a pretty low hurdle.

Re: Two Cheers For New Jersey! (Mark Schmitt & Kevin D. Williamson)

He did not say that all school expenditures had to be cut. He said they could be distributed as vouchers, like food stamps, so there could be competition among private schools as there is among...

Re: Two Cheers For New Jersey! (Mark Schmitt & Kevin D. Williamson)

None of your graphs indicate poverty.

Do any of your graphs include wealth transfers from higher income groups to lower income groups via entitlements?

Re: The Week in Blog: For Pete's Sake Edition (Bill Scher & Matt Lewis)

I thought the Republicans were supposed to be against raising taxes on anyone. So how are they going to lower the 47% untaxed figure, hmmm?

Re: Lessons Learned: Domestic Radicalization (Arun Kundnani & David Schanzer)

"Muslims are enslaved by the disgusting ideology of hatred (quite literally, as the punishment for apostasy is DEATH), and I wish for all people to be free."

The Koran says, "There is no...

Re: Lessons Learned: Domestic Radicalization (Arun Kundnani & David Schanzer)

So effectively you are saying that Islam is a terrorist creed, and anyone who proclaims themselves Muslim and attends prayers or donates to the mosque must be considered to be supporting a terrorist...

Re: Lessons Learned: The Creation of Terrorists (Robert Wright & Scott Atran)

It is a shame how America's response to any perceived threat is pre-scripted by the militarist DNA that has evolved into our body politic. Even an enlightened and shrewd president who knew better...

Re: Lessons Learned: The Creation of Terrorists (Robert Wright & Scott Atran)

Great and surprising dv. Atran confirms everything a dear Muslim friend has been trying to tell me for years and in which I have been interested but highly skeptical. I think I owe my friend an...

Re: Lessons Learned: The Creation of Terrorists (Robert Wright & Scott Atran)

Don't know what planet you've been living on for the past five years if you think Paki hasn't done anything. It may not be as much as the US wanted, but it was more than enough to stir the hornets...

Re: Booze and Money (Tim Fernholz & Megan McArdle)

The government cannot be held accountable? I think you may change your mind in November 2012.

Re: This Cutting Edge (John McWhorter & Glenn Loury)

These guys were so bummed out in this dv. I think McWhorter and Loury need to have a moratorium on discussion of Obama until Obama does something really good. For their sake, and ours.

Re: Values Added: Christians for Marriage Equality (Anna Taylor Sweringen & Peter Laarman)

[QUOTE=sugarkang;219025]Okay, why is atheism superior to religion? Any intolerant religious person that you point out, I can point out a tolerant religious person. I can easily point out atheists...

Re: Values Added: Christians for Marriage Equality (Anna Taylor Sweringen & Peter Laarman)

I really can't understand anyone objecting to a refusal to believe in something for which there is no credible evidence. That seems to me to be a really weird position to take on anything, let alone...

Re: Values Added: Christians for Marriage Equality (Anna Taylor Sweringen & Peter Laarman)

In the West, it can be traced further, back to 5th century BC Greece, where the pre-Socratic philosophers actually thought about things rather than absorbing pre-oackaged stories. In India, atheism...

Re: Values Added: Christians for Marriage Equality (Anna Taylor Sweringen & Peter Laarman)

No one is arguing against seeking wisdom. I have a hard time finding wisdom in surrendering to dogma.

Re: Values Added: Christians for Marriage Equality (Anna Taylor Sweringen & Peter Laarman)

Right, the anti-homosexuality thing has as much to do with Christ as genital mutilation has to do with the Koran, ie, nothing. People confuse religion with cultural tradition all the time, even when...

Re: Values Added: Christians for Marriage Equality (Anna Taylor Sweringen & Peter Laarman)

Wow. It is sad how humans make up stories to try to explain and shape the world into a better place, then end up fighting viciously over the various versions of the story. How much better it would...

Re: National Security Mother-Daughter Edition (Heather Hurlburt & Carol Hurlburt)

Re: An Occasion of Sin (Mark Schmitt & Tim Carney)
