Re: Science Saturday: Why We Get Fat (John Horgan & Gary Taubes)

Observational research has numerous limitations (and like most research, most of it kinda sucks) but being unable to control for things like poor people living near power lines isn't one of those...

Re: Brilliant! (Robert Wright & Mickey Kaus)

Great stuff! Bob and Mickey are both way brillianter than Zakaria, Wieseltier, etc. :-)

Re: Goddapalooza (Robert Wright & Ann Althouse)

I also suspect Obama's a non-believer, and it's worth remembering that, IIRC, Americans' say they'd be even less likely to vote for an atheist for president than for a Muslim . . . if present...

Sweden vs. Salvation

Kudos to Ann for suggesting that many practicing Christians and Muslims put getting to an afterlife far ahead of the various foreign policy goals important to policy wonks like Bob . . . this is...

Re: Are the Meccan surahs of the Koran more tolerant?

Well, I should note that I haven't yet read Bob's book, but to me he's also unique in that he's a pro-Enlightenment teleological apologist for religion, which seems to me to have a little more...

Re: Are the Meccan surahs of the Koran more tolerant?

Hi Brendan,

Agree with your comments on noblesse oblige in the links, and I hadn't realized that Bob's book has already been discussed here several times before. My take (which I'm sure others...

Re: Are the Meccan surahs of the Koran more tolerant?

Hi BJ,

Well, Ziuaddin Sardar made it through a "trans-modernist" reading of the first two surahs for the Guardian but IMO the smart, mean secular left commenters there absolutely demolished him ....

Re: Are the Meccan surahs of the Koran more tolerant?

Hi All,

Coincidentally I've been re-reading the first 15-20 (mostly Meccan) surahs of the Koran these past few days and they actually strike me as more political, less ethereal and more wrathful...

Re: Superbama vs. McHulk

Well, although I agree she at times sounded like it here Ana isn't your average MSM shill . . . check out Wonkette if you haven't done so : )

Re: Santa Ana Winds Edition

Interesting discussion of "pals around with terrorists." I fully agree with Bob's "cynical" interpretation of the intent of the remark but from an ultra-PC point of view that actually puts him on...

Re: Old Man on the Offensive

I give Mickey credit for correctly anticipating the MSM conventional wisdom about the debate, but the post-debate polls strongly suggested that no one wants an angry/giggly old man on the offensive ....

Re: Snark Deficit

Hmm, I was super psyched for this but twenty minutes in I'm disappointed by the absence of snark from Ana in particular . . . I know that TIME demands a certain amount of gravitas, but election of...

Re: Irresponsible Predictions

As a university professor who's published work on the Middle East (which apparently means Eli should slavishly bow down before me) I think conservatives are right to point to both the political AND...

Re: Free Will: The Virtues of Hypocrisy

I take it you're being somewhat ironic here, but it's just not surprising to me that "high-brow" elites typically object to popular anti-hypocrisy . . . though if you want a high-brow Oxford prof who...

Re: Free Will: The Virtues of Hypocrisy

One interesting tidbit re the bailout plans that may or may not have been mentioned is that Sec. Paulson supposedly still has somewhere between $100 million and $500 million (i.e., most of his...

Re: Free Will: The Virtues of Hypocrisy

I've read the book . . . David follows a long tradition of academic apologists for leader hypocrisy, but I just don't find these persuasive . . . Gerald Cohen's IF YOU'RE AN EGALITARIAN HOW COME...

Re: Financial Apocalypse Edition

Oh no, it appears the Dem Congress is putting partisan politics aside on the ostensible behalf of us all! It's not inconceivable that they could structure a deal that could actually make taxpayers...

Re: Financial Apocalypse Edition

Gross makes a reasonable case that the Dems aren't 100% clean when it comes to deregulation, but particularly if this "S&L Bailout plus" idea on which the market is currently soaring goes through, I...

Finance : )

But in my defense I've never been invested in the stock market and it's mostly just a bunch of statistical yakkity-yak about alternatives thereto . . .

Well, sorry to be an a-hole (and to hypocritically invoke expertise!) . . . looks like your genuinely conservative antagonists are back on the scene now so I'll leave you guys to it! Viva discourse!...
