Re: Auto-Tune Me (Christopher Beam & Julian Sanchez)

Re: Science Saturday: What's Wrong With Transhumanism?

Word. It's another manifestation of the cult of the natural. Death may be natural, but that doesn't mean it is intrinsically good. Human being impose our will on the natural world, it's what we do.

Re: The Ethics of "Immortality"

That's something that came to my mind as well. It's safe to assume that radical life extension would come about as a small part of a greater technological advancement. The universe is a big place. ...

Re: Values Added: Progressive Christianity (David Gushee & Peter Laarman)

I'd be interested in seeing a discussion between a progressive Christian and a more conservative, traditional one. I don't really understand the mentality of progressive Christians. Why embrace an...

Re: Mobilizing to Save Civilization (Lester Brown & David Roberts)

My understanding of the geoengineering argument in the book isn't "oh we can just do a quick-fix of all our environmental problems" but rather that if we find ourself heading into a civilization...

Re: Science Saturday: Fie on Hooey

I"m very surprised to hear about the DMT-cult being sanctioned. I wonder if this will open the way for other substance based religions.

Re: Percontations: A Tale of Data, Theory, and Coral Reefs (Greg Laden & David Dobbs)

Maybe to mollify those angered in The Great Creationist Hub-Bub of '09, we will be getting hard science in Precontations?

Re: Percontations: A Tale of Data, Theory, and Coral Reefs (Greg Laden & David Dobbs)

I can't get this to play past the first few seconds, the playback stops and the "continue this" screen pops up as of it were at the end of a topic section even though I was watching the whole diavlog.

Re: "The Evolution of God" by Robert Wright

Could you expand a little on the objective sense in which ethics are(is?) improving?

Re: "The Evolution of God" by Robert Wright

His word, not mine. Putting nomenclature aside, do you see the underlying problem? Any culture will judge itself good by the metric of its own ethics, its a vacuous statement. The problem is Bob...

Re: "The Evolution of God" by Robert Wright

Franco, it's a tautology in the sense that no matter what point you pick in history, morality in eras closer to you chronologicaly will seem "better" to you, while the ethics of eras further in the...

Re: "The Evolution of God" by Robert Wright

This commenter from the Wade piece sums up my frustration with Bob's thesis:

Re: Free Will: Liberaltarianism Showdown

Will, I think you are probably the bhead closest to me in terms of ideology, so don't mope too much about being completely isolated. Your project is great, god knows Libertarians need a good kick in...

Re: Things Learned From Reading Every Single Word of the Bible

Julia, what do you think religion is good for?

I was raised Southern Baptist - like Bob! - and now am an unbeliever. I think takes like yours are interesting, but it is so far from what I was...

Re: Is Our Children Learning?

I think the public schools might function a bit better if subjected to some competitive forces. Also, if a voucher system guaranteed x amount of money for each student, it wouldn't have to reduce...

Re: Science Saturday: The Young and the Restless

Even though I enjoy reading him, I'm inclined to wonder if PZ has a net negative influence on public perception of evolutionary science.

Re: Where's the "Embedding" Bob talked about?

Will Wilkinson has an example of it on his site:

Of course, I'm not sure how you do it. I'm assuming it...

Re: "No woman is illegal"

Judging from the rest of his analysis, it's safe to say he's probably not too concerned with a careful accounting for details.
