Re: UN Plaza: Honduras Since the Coup (Mark Leon Goldberg & Peter Hakim)

It's not the government shutting down the press. The media outlets (which, again, are in violation of the law) aren't being taken over by the state media, they're being given over to the community...

Re: UN Plaza: Honduras Since the Coup (Mark Leon Goldberg & Peter Hakim)

Two points. First, how did Zelaya violate the Honduran constitution? The usual line from the Miami Herald and that whole crowd is that he was attempting to run for another term, which is pretty...

Re: UN Plaza: Honduras Since the Coup (Mark Leon Goldberg & Peter Hakim)

Sorry to burst your bubble, but if the Honduran oligarchy had tried to recall Zelaya through a democratic election, they would have lost, just like the Venezuelan oligarchy lost when they tried to...

False equivalency

Did Peter Hakim really just draw a comparison between a military coup and what happened to Goni and Mesa in Bolivia? Seriously?

When he calls popular democratic movements "street mobs" he betrays...

Re: 1/6 Americans is either unemployed or underemployed

I don't support giving them money in the first place.

Re: 1/6 Americans is either unemployed or underemployed

I certainly agree that we should be taxing wealth, but I think it's silly to say that taxing income stifles growth, especially the small increase that Obama proposed.

Re: Bobtopia vs. Pinkestan (Robert Wright & James Pinkerton)

I don't think these results are likely to last. By all indications, the economy is going to get a lot worse and probably won't recover for at least a couple of years (unless Obama fires Summers and...

Re: 1/6 Americans is either unemployed or underemployed

Oh I definitely agree, for every point Pinkerton made that I almost agreed with him on he made ten that were ridiculous.

Also, I think if the government was worried about people's retirement, they...

NPT

Bob calls the elimination of nuclear weapons a "rhetorical tool" and a "long term goal", but actually the nuclear powers that signed the NPT specifically agreed to take good faith efforts to...

Re: 1/6 Americans is either unemployed or underemployed

While I usually strongly disagree with him, I think Pinkerton is right that Bob has bought way too much into the Wall Street line. A temporary rally when financiers found out they were going to get...

1/6 Americans is either unemployed or underemployed

This is the real cause of the economic crisis. Bob is way too focused on the stock market.

Pinkerton is also right that the bailout is transferring wealth to the rich. Worse than that, it's...

Re: The Obama administration's trade policy

You're strawmanning the position of people who oppose free trade. They recognize that the United States receives benefits from free trade, the question is who in the United States. It definitely...

Re: G-20 or Die Trying

We definitely do. You seem to think that the policies, like the reversal of Mexico's land reform in the 1990's that I referred to earlier, and the overproduction of food in the West are natural...

Re: G-20 or Die Trying

It definitely plays are large part, but it's important not to underestimate the effects that the policies of Third World governments have in undoing land reform and generally helping large land...

Re: G-20 or Die Trying

They no longer had the choice to farm, so they were forced to move to the cities to find work. Seriously, this is basic political economy.

EDIT: The very fact that there is massive popular...

Re: when republicans have a country, then they should care about FP

They are accountable to the people, otherwise they can't reasonably claim to be a democracy. Polls are a, albeit sometimes imperfect, measure of the will of the people, and there is overwhelming...

Re: G-20 or Die Trying

It is an objective statement, and it does reflect people's decisions. The ability to be a subsistence farmer is taken away from them. This is always how it goes, from the English enclosure movement...

Re: G-20 or Die Trying

Most people would rather remain peasants than work in sweatshops. That's why all sorts of policies are enacted to destroy subsistence farming and get people to move to the cities, in every country...

Re: when republicans have a country, then they should care about FP

An individual poll may be wrong, but we're talking about many polls over a long period of time. You will not find a serious analyst who disagrees with the claims that the Iraqi people want the...

Two Cheers for Sweatshops?

Drezner's apologism for sweatshops is disgusting. It shows the moral bankruptcy of free traders.

And to pretend that free trade is in the interest of Third World countries is also wrong. I...

Re: when republicans have a country, then they should care about FP

If elections don't elect governments that don't enact what is the clear will of the people, then there's something wrong with the elections.

And it isn't just humiliating, it's deadly. It's...

Re: when republicans have a country, then they should care about FP

Maliki might not want the United States to leave because they are keeping him in power. The Iraqi people have wanted the US out forever, poll after poll has shown this. It was only massive pressure...

Re: when republicans have a country, then they should care about FP

The elected Iraqi government wants us out, that's what the Status of Forces Agreement was about. Obama has different ideas.

The people of Iraq want us out even faster, and they're the ones who...

Re: when republicans have a country, then they should care about FP

The death rate is higher than before the invasion, people have less access to basic needs like clean water and electricity, and the people of Iraq don't even have the ability to control whether or...

Re: when republicans have a country, then they should care about FP

Iraqi's are worse off as a result of the war. If we wanted to improve their lives, then we should have lifted the sanctions. Saddam would have been out of power eventually and 1.3 million people...
