Re: Means and Ends (Joshua Cohen & Glenn Loury)

Eliezer very much does not equate human and artificial intelligence. AI is potentially much more powerful. (Somehow I doubt that you consider that to be a weakening of your point, though :).)

Re: Means and Ends (Joshua Cohen & Glenn Loury)

I have pretty much the opposite impression of Eliezer. Do you have an example in mind?

Re: The Bob Show

techincally "non-zero sum" but illustrative in any case since it could be attached to the non-for-profit foundation.

He could branch out from the Atlantic to a food column. Call it "Non-Zero...

Re: from Science Saturday

What would be your sarcasm-free attempt at a description of the view to which you are opposed?

Re: from Science Saturday

Was this a reply to my comment here (http://bloggingheads.tv/forum/showpost.php?p=198858&postcount=1)? If so, I am willing to continue the conversation civilly if you are.

I believe that you are...

Re: Science Saturday: Multiregional Evolution (Razib Khan & Milford Wolpoff)

No; I read what you wrote and assumed that you were reacting to a straw man version of the actual opposing argument. The opposing argument just does not claim, or imply, that "we are all exactly...

Re: Science Saturday: Multiregional Evolution (Razib Khan & Milford Wolpoff)

It's less directly natural selection. Consider a trait T that we have but that Neanderthals don't. If you go back 100,000 years, there were moderns and Neanderthals. The moderns had T, but the...

Re: Science Saturday: Multiregional Evolution (Razib Khan & Milford Wolpoff)

That would indeed be a ridiculous view. But it is not what people mean when they say that race is a social construct. Would you be interested in an explanation of what the "race is social...

Re: Science Saturday: How We Learn

Actually, I think a lot of the time she was just asking Michael to clarify a point because he was being obscure or using terminology that the audience might not be familiar with. But Michael somehow...

Re: Identity Economics (Will Wilkinson & Rachel Kranton)

I agree with this if you mean: If we desire a state S because of facts that are independent of what we will experience, then we regard ourselves as having a reason to acquire an enjoyment of...

Re: Identity Economics (Will Wilkinson & Rachel Kranton)

I have to break my reply up into two parts :).

Yes, I think that we understand each other on this point. I would also point out that the same remarks apply to your desire for justice. ...

Re: Science Saturday: The Great Singularity Debate

Eliezer is not a property dualist. He believes that all properties of your mind are ultimately properties of your brain or of what your brain is doing. This means that he is not a property dualist....

Re: Identity Economics (Will Wilkinson & Rachel Kranton)

I think that you are selling the expected-utility-maximizing framework short. It can capture this distinction.

Your taste for vanilla ice cream is not a "brute" taste in the sense of having no...

Are you saying that they ignore IQ altogether? Or are you saying that they don't take IQ to be the sole and ultimate cause? And, in either case, what is your evidence for how they treat IQ? I...

Re: Science Saturday: Nuclear Energy Edition

The thesis is that people go to war to acquire or protect resources, but oil isn't the only resource. The Yugoslavian civil war presented various threats to the material well-being of those who...

Re: Science Saturday: Nuclear Energy Edition

Yes, it's strange that the Western world cared so much about the Gulf Region. I wonder what could possibly have made them think it was so important. Just a bunch of sand is all...

Re: Science Saturday: Who Got What Wrong? (Jerry Fodor & Elliott Sober)

I think his point is more that a theory should add something significant to the concrete examples taken from its domain. In particular, the theory should make some nontrivial claim about all...

Re: Science Saturday: Who Got What Wrong? (Jerry Fodor & Elliott Sober)

That's probably Fodor's most direct statement of his conclusion. But most of the diavlog was spent circling around Fodor's key argument for his conclusion. Fodor stated this argument most concisely...

Re: Percontations: The Nature of Probability (Eliezer Yudkowsky & Andrew Gelman)

No. I'm saying that the conjunction of

p(H | E1) > p(H),

and

p(H | E1 & E2) = p(H | ~E1 & E2) = p(H | E2)

might very well happen in this particular case.

Re: Science Saturday: Verbs and Violence (Robert Wright & Steven Pinker)

Re: Science Saturday: Verbs and Violence (Robert Wright & Steven Pinker)

I haven't read The Stuff of Thought, but from Pinker's talks I gather that his examples hold across a wide variety of languages.
