Re: Talking Black (John McWhorter & Glenn Loury)

I"m with Glenn's wife, but I associate it more with the rot of postmoderism in our universities and the excess that has allowed many people top posts at Harvard in part by being merely "women" or...

Re: Science Saturday: Caseic Edition (Maggie Koerth Baker & Christina Agapakis)

So, two white "chicks" feel obligated to talk about diversity in science?

"Diversity" for its own sake here too quickly becomes a political, social, and ideological goal; par for the course on...

Re: Science Saturday: Ethics of Infants

Tolerance as as a high virtue has benefits, but when reasonably disagreed with ...it's obvious that people act like people and point fingers, get uncomfortable, debate, get angry, ostracize, seek...

Re: "In the name of Islam?"

Ocean,

A few responses:

Historically it has been almost always the case that people who have rebelled against an oppressive regime need to organize themselves outside that country

Indeed. ...

Re: "In the name of Islam?"

Are you going to use rational discourse to dispel misinformation or are you going to use it to support irrational fears?

A false choice. Not all fear is irrational. It's quite rational to be...

Re: "In the name of Islam?"

Although, I agree with the basic fact that some Muslims in the US may be radicalizing (as I described above), the language in your paragraph verges in what I consider to be very dangerous: paranoia....

Re: "In the name of Islam?"

Ocean, here's where I might agree with you:

It is a very small fraction of Muslims who are attacking us. That's a fact.

The majority of Muslims in this country face an uphill battle against...

Re: Values Added: The Blue Devil Imam (Mona Eltahawy & Abdullah Antepli)

Creepy?

I suspect a lot of people emigrate to America for a lot of reasons. Three big ones are: economic opportunity, religious freedom and political stability.

So the Irish who came here...

Re: Values Added: The Blue Devil Imam (Mona Eltahawy & Abdullah Antepli)

And I should add to both Mona and Abdullah: Yes, this is about inclusion, and yes working toward that goal together is worthwhile. Yes, I'm with you on including Muslims into civil society.

Re: Values Added: The Blue Devil Imam (Mona Eltahawy & Abdullah Antepli)

Thanks for both for the talk.

My interest in normalizing Muslim groups comes in part from fear: Torn teenaged Muslims in America can go online, find someone like Al-Awlaki's site, radicalize and...

Re: An Advertisement for Openness (Glenn Greenwald & Matt Welch)

Kant did have a portrait of Rousseau in his study. Touche.

What I mean by the second paragraph is: He is an idealist, but Kant argues that virtue and happiness cannot be predicated upon each...

Re: An Advertisement for Openness (Glenn Greenwald & Matt Welch)

No, I don't, really. I think the moral depth behind some of his criticisms is profound enough to cause me to question some of what I find immoral in U.S. foreign policy as well as my own moral...

But this is exactly the point. Living in one man's "world" is what Chomsky and others who believe in small "d" democracy are struggling to prevent. The world belongs to all of us, and...

Re: An Advertisement for Openness (Glenn Greenwald & Matt Welch)

A good definition of conservatism is one that recognizes that conservatism doesn't seek to increase inequality, but rather it doesn't seek to constrain human nature to policy, force of law, and the...

Re: An Advertisement for Openness (Glenn Greenwald & Matt Welch)

I remember thinking about Chomsky when hearing about Assange, but I'm a fan of neither. Chomsky is an anarchist if nothing else, and a philosophical idealist. He's stayed relatively true to those...

Re: Palinisms (Jacob Weisberg & Ann Althouse)

I think Weisburg makes it clear that he really wants to control the people who wish to put religion into everything. He wants to control, on some level, without proper understanding perhaps: the...
