Re: Lessons Learned: Iraq War Redux? (Robert Wright & Heather Hurlburt)

I think it's fairly obvious why the Center didn't ask that question: it's not a good question. Most experienced researchers would recognize that sort of question to be presumptuous. It is not...

Your statement couldn't be farther from the truth.

One Palestine, Complete puts the lie to your counterclaim. Don't let the present geopolitics of Arab-Jewish relations constrain your imagination of what is possible in theory and practice.

Re: Lessons Learned: Iraq War Redux? (Robert Wright & Heather Hurlburt)

Neither the British nor the UN had the right to dispose of Palestine. Similarly, the US Supreme Court had no right to decide the plight of Cherokee lands, even though it did so favorably to some...

Re: Is US decline in the eye of the beholder?

Whenever American exceptionalism is called into question in the popular media the tendency is always dismiss it as a fad. In point of fact, when you read a serious discussion like Wallerstein's The...

Re: Robert Wright & Heather Hurlburt

On MSNBC's Morning Joe, Richard Haas claims the IAEA report pulls together all this evidence about Iran program that points to its desire to weaponize its program. Iran responds to IAEA...

Re: Values Added: The Whirligig of Time (Glenn Loury & Walter Russell Mead)

I think this is the elephant in the room: white supremacy. Ironic how American support for Israel against its own national interests can be attributed to a "complex set of factors" with little or no...

Re: Lessons Learned: Iraq War Redux? (Robert Wright & Heather Hurlburt)

I completely agree. When Heather proclaims at the outset that Iran's hostility toward its neighbors is indisputable, I thought maybe she should inform the Arab street of all this hostitly, 64%...

Re: Values Added: Capitalism and Its Discontents (John McWhorter & Glenn Loury)

I'd like to second this post. I was especially put off by John's dismissive, snobbish tone. I can think of two more goals I'd like this movement (if it can be called a movement) to adopt: (1) push to...

Re: Rave On (Robert Wright & Ann Althouse)

Ann has a thing about drums . . . interesting how tribalism and drums go together in her mind.

Re: RACISM and the STUDY OF HUMAN ORIGINS

Someone should dig up Wolpoff'S past lectures on multiregionalism and the "Out of Africa" because I know there is at least one I recall hearing in college that demonstrated to me his utter contempt...

Re: "Creeping Shariah"

I agree.

Dr. Jackson would be a great choice to discuss Shariah here, along with another scholar, maybe Tariq Ramadhan? I say Tariq because Muslims in Europe have similar challenges.

Re: "Creeping Shariah"

The exchange about the absurdity of creeping shariah was a missed opportunity. Rather than dwell on the absurdity of imposing shariah, why not use that time to actually explain what in fact is the...

Re: Greg Mortenson

It is an entirely plausible proposition that if you look at the regions around the world where gender inequality is the greatest (in favor of men, of course), literacy levels among men will be the...

Re: Greg Mortenson

Great reply, Preppy. I was thinking along the same lines when I read Jeff's question. The goal is to advance the country as a whole, and to do that you need to address the educational needs of...

Re: Big Government Libertarianism (Glenn Loury & Jim Pinkerton)

So a purpose of the law is to control and/or minimize an infectious outbreak even though an outbreak may not be imminent. How is that concern any different than a country wanting to reduce public...

Re: Big Government Libertarianism (Glenn Loury & Jim Pinkerton)

What is the serious epidemiological concern behind State Law (I presume in all states) requiring public school employees have updated TB tests every three years or so?

Re: Big Government Libertarianism (Glenn Loury & Jim Pinkerton)

Putting forth a public health rationale doesn't equate to "immigrants are diseased". How do you make that leap?

Re: Big Government Libertarianism (Glenn Loury & Jim Pinkerton)

I disagree. But if Florian is reading this I'd like to know what he thinks(about "common sense never being an argument"), since he is a trained philosopher.

Re: Big Government Libertarianism (Glenn Loury & Jim Pinkerton)

Well that's the point. A common sense argument need not be 'made'. It's truthfulness, i.e. the need for border security, is prima facie.
