thanks from BHF

First off: Mickey, so sorry to hear about the passing of your mother.

To Bob: I think your good friend Mickey is giving you good advice about the right attitude to have regarding the restructuring...

Re: Snip Snip Edition (Emily Bazelon & Hanna Rosin)

But the policy change (new CDC rec.) is a policy change in other direction, so status quo would be to keep neutral position where doctor's receive little guidance from the government and there is a...

Re: Snip Snip Edition (Emily Bazelon & Hanna Rosin)

Fair enough. I think the general principle on the part of the medical establishment should be "first do no harm." The fact that there is a vocal community of people saying it did cause them harm is...

I'm just catching up with the comments now, but I wanted to say to mattcbrown:

Re: Snip Snip Edition (Emily Bazelon & Hanna Rosin)

I don't think I have a problem here because I didn't actually say it was either/or -- I was just using the formulation to illustrate one way it could matter who 'wins' the debate (that's why I framed...

Re: Snip Snip Edition (Emily Bazelon & Hanna Rosin)

Good point. Sorry I just read it now; I'm just catching up.

I made a similar comment, but I like your "burden of proof" argument because, put that way, it forces the proponents of recommended...

Re: Snip Snip Edition (Emily Bazelon & Hanna Rosin)

Hi bj,
Of course, you have every right in the world to care about some issues and not others. But, politely, I'm interested to know *why* you don't care about this issue. I mean, you can...

Re: Snip Snip Edition (Emily Bazelon & Hanna Rosin)

I agree with this summary statement. Perhaps a more careful comparison is in order:

[I do agree with Emily and Hanna that male circumcision as practiced in the West is not equivalent to female...

Re: Snip Snip Edition (Emily Bazelon & Hanna Rosin)

After reading the forums, I have to (mostly) agree with Nikkibong on this issue. I found this diavlog (and their articles and blog posts) incredibly smug and insensitive to call opponents of this...

Re: A Theory of Torture (Joshua Cohen & Mark Schmitt)

That's a great idea to pair Nagel with Wilkinson, and I can see your point that the "libertarian v. liberal" aspect of a Nagel/Cohen discussion might not be so interesting if it descended to a...

Re: A Theory of Torture (Joshua Cohen & Mark Schmitt)

I second that! Seems we had similar impulses about wanting to hear more about Rawls, etc. (see my comment above). Nagel and Cohen would be the dynamic duo of political theory-diavlogging!

Re: A Theory of Torture (Joshua Cohen & Mark Schmitt)

Me too! I really enjoyed this, especially the conversation about Rawls, which was fascinating. In fact, it leads me to a make a meta-comment about Joshua Cohen's diavlogs:

While this is perhaps...

Re: Bob finally learns the difference between a theory and a Just-So Story

Right. From what I hear, a diavlog with Dawkins would be more of an all out debate. :) There is a place for that sort of thing too...maybe Bob could be convinced to host a debate, or series of...

Re: Bob finally learns the difference between a theory and a Just-So Story

Agreed. Overall, the diavlog was quite interesting and left me wanting more...clearly a topic that should be discussed further, perhaps with new participants. Maybe Carl Zimmer? Or John Horgan? ...

Re: Bob finally learns the difference between a theory and a Just-So Story

Oh, I see what you're saying. I agree that the normative statement doesn't seem to follow obviously from sexual selection theory being valid or invalid, so its weird if she tried to make a strong...

Re: Bob finally learns the difference between a theory and a Just-So Story

I'd agree with you on this: if we view this as merely a "debate" then there is really no responsibility to understand or explore new arguments or evidence. A debate is about winning, which puts a...

Re: Bob finally learns the difference between a theory and a Just-So Story

I never argued we should accept her arguments because of her status. I'm just asking Bob to listen...especially considering her background as an evolutionary biologist, she may have something to...

Re: Bob finally learns the difference between a theory and a Just-So Story

Hey Uncle Eb...big fan of your work. Now to reply: I never said he wasn't genial. This is about considering the arguments, or lack thereof.

I agree with you that she didn't have terrific...

Re: Bob finally learns the difference between a theory and a Just-So Story

I guess I would have had him actually consider her argument, ask or talk about teamwork and cooperation (the unique thing she actually brings to the diavlog), rather than simply repeat the sexual...

Re: Bob finally learns the difference between a theory and a Just-So Story

Wow, I kept listening to 45:00. This is getting frustrating. Bob sounds like someone who is really invested in a set of ideas and is trying to defend them against an outsider. Of course, this is...

Re: Bob finally learns the difference between a theory and a Just-So Story

Sorry I'm late to the party on this great diavlog, but I just had to give my 2 cents -- basically, I agree with Bloggin' Noggin. Bob is being confronted with ideas that really do shake his worldview...

Re: God and Man on the Right

Maybe not in the official press release, but I'd be surprised if you think that Ross's religious writings weren't a topic of discussion, perhaps even positively (under the view that he'd be "reaching...

Good point. Kindof strange, though, given that he's supposedly being hired because of his insights into religious conservatism, right?

I'd have to agree: I generally enjoy Ross more than...

Re: God and Man on the Right

Agreed, that was dumb. Although it did mask a more interesting mis-reading of basic social science findings that conservatives often make. Correlation does not equal causation. I wonder what...
