Re: Science Saturday: String Wars (John Horgan & George Musser)

I'm not convinced JH understands the theory well enough, and he only dismisses it on philosophical grounds. I think he owes it to the many accomplished scientists who have contributed to the theory...

Re: Values Added: Christians for Marriage Equality (Anna Taylor Sweringen & Peter Laarman)

I'm very curious where Christianity stands if you throw out the bible as a reliable source. What exactly are your beliefs based on, then? Can one just make up whatever morality makes sense to them,...

Re: Values Added: Shomer Shabbat (Hanna Rosin & Judith Shulevitz)

I want to suggest a more pragmatic explanation for why Elohim rests: the Shabbat practice was already in place, and this was a way for the P writer to encode this ritual into the creation of the...

Re: The George Clooney and Meryl Streep of American Letters (Walter Kirn & Susan Orlean)

Kubrick worked almost exclusively on adaptations, and his movies are almost all masterpieces. The Shining was way better than the book, for example.

Once Upon a Time in America is an adaptation....

Because he wanted off the show.

Re: He's Baaack (John McWhorter & Glenn Loury)

It's no proof of that, of course. Merely a suggestion in that direction. The theologan does need to explain whether God could have given a better value for pi (say 31/10), if not why not, and if so,...

Re: He's Baaack (John McWhorter & Glenn Loury)

Obviously that wasn't the "intent", but it is an implication. If I tell you that the area of a right triangle with two side lengths equal to 1 is 1/2, then I'm not intending to say that the integral...

Re: He's Baaack (John McWhorter & Glenn Loury)

Yeah, I would call the approximation pi = 3 that come out of rounding, a "rounding error", since it's an error due to rounding.

I disagree with your interpretation. Under my interpretation, which...

Re: He's Baaack (John McWhorter & Glenn Loury)

Decimal expansions were also not in use at the time of the bible, so it is really pointless to speak in terms of decimals anyway.

The reason people focus on this particular passage is that is...

Re: He's Baaack (John McWhorter & Glenn Loury)

The notation "pi" for that ratio was not invented for many centuries, and involves a greek letter, also the "=" sign for equals was a much later invention, so it was more or less impossible a priori...

Re: He's Baaack (John McWhorter & Glenn Loury)

It's not urban legend: 1 Kings 7:23.
By what seems to me to be the most reasonable interpretation of this passage, we can conclude that pi = 3. It of course doesn't literally say that "pi = 3", the...

Re: The Barbaric Yawp (Dayo Olopade & John McWhorter)

I would draw the distinction as follows:

1. Whether or not a statement is racist.
2. How bad it is to have made that statement.

Taking a utilitarian point of view, if someone makes a racist...

Re: Percontations: What Should We Believe?

Maybe I'm just too much of a philosophy fan, but I find this infinitely more interesting than the usual blathering about politics that goes on here.
