Re: Science Saturday: The Great Singularity Debate

Yup, I'm familiar with her story. It's intriguing because she recovered so thoroughly yet with a somewhat different personality.

Re: Science Saturday: The Great Singularity Debate

It's an old concept but in some ways has always been related to mechanistic interpretations of mind as in the thought experiments of G.W.Liebnitz who imagined getting really tiny and walking around...

Re: Science Saturday: The Great Singularity Debate

My thinking is why put the cart in front of the horse? Let's figure out the brain first then deal with that knowledge, instead of getting all excited about possibilities that depend on already having...

Re: Science Saturday: The Great Singularity Debate

You're a dualist if you think that the contents of one body/brain can be downloaded to a machine even in principle. I'm not saying that AI is impossible. I think it might be quite possible to...

Re: Science Saturday: The Great Singularity Debate

I don't distinguish mind from body/brain. I think they are the same thing. I'm not a dualist. I, like Massimo, think Eleizer is a dualist.

And I'm not so sure the mind is balanced in any kind of...

Re: Science Saturday: The Great Singularity Debate

I indicated no such thing. I only think Eleizer is full of crap. That's all. I'm in no way impugning AI, only the singularity insofar as it presupposes that human thought can be continued...

Re: Science Saturday: The Great Singularity Debate

You might be changing the subject. Eliezer argued for continuity of human thought from biological instantiation in a human body to instantiation in a machine of some sort. I think there is no reason...

Re: Science Saturday: The Great Singularity Debate

Downloading the human mind (in it's entirety/completeness/fullness) to a machine presupposes the it can be perfectly understood. Presupposing that the human mind can be perfectly understood is silly....

Re: Science Saturday: The Great Singularity Debate

Well, I think to replicate the variety and specificity of human thought digitally might be possible in principle but impossible in practice. AI sure, but Artificial Humans--why not put a tiny...

Re: Science Saturday: The Great Singularity Debate

This is the nub. So much comes down to attitude. E is very invested in winning and when M doesn't roll over for him he gets frustrated and whiny. M is more patient than I would have been. I got a bit...

Re: Science Saturday: Confronting the Right Wing

John, I'm at the point in the diavlog where you are expressing upset that haidt asks liberals to be the understanding ones in trying to reach some kind of consensus w/ conservatives. I don't think...

Re: S.P.O.D. (Sarah Palin Obsession Disorder)

Bob,

I was very interesting to hear what Jacqueline Shire had to say about sarah palin but she could hardly get a word in! You have good things to say too but why even bother having a guest on...

Re: Free Will: Intellectual Cousins Edition

Will, I completely agree with you viz a viz the relevance of philosophy to moving culture in a substantial or meaningful way (if I can paraphrase what you said as such). You voiced your frustration...
