Re: Eisenhower's Virtues (Richard Dagger & Jason Brennan)

P.S. You might as well stop with the name-calling and such. I might be mistaken about everything I've claimed, but there isn't any controversy about whether I am well-versed in history, the history...

Re: Eisenhower's Virtues (Richard Dagger & Jason Brennan)

I'm an philosopher, not a social scientist, though I am quite well trained in the social sciences.

Your post confirms what I argued. On Rousseau's account of the common good, it is possible to...

Re: Eisenhower's Virtues (Richard Dagger & Jason Brennan)

I realized as I was presenting this paper at the Pacific APA yesterday that Franco's main intellectual complaint (as opposed to his "I'm a failed academic so I resent the world"-based complaints)...

Re: Eisenhower's Virtues (Richard Dagger & Jason Brennan)

Ledocs,

Thanks for the post. I'll have to respond to it more at length later. I just wanted to clear up something here first, since some of what I said was misleading. There seems to be a...

Re: Eisenhower's Virtues (Richard Dagger & Jason Brennan)

Hi Unit,

I agree with much of what you said. Many people use the common good as a smokescreen to exploit others. Others genuinely wish to promote the common good, but end up harming it because...

Re: Eisenhower's Virtues (Richard Dagger & Jason Brennan)

I'm shocked by how anonymous people behave on the internet. I don't understand where Franco is coming from, or what evidence he has for the claims that I can't write, don't know history, and don't...

Re: Eisenhower's Virtues (Richard Dagger & Jason Brennan)

Franco,

I got this definition from Richard Dagger, Shelley Burtt, Jack Crittendon, and William Galston, among others. They all use it or some very slight variation on it in their writings.

Re: Eisenhower's Virtues (Richard Dagger & Jason Brennan)

Franco, if you send me an email address, I will send you a current draft of the paper "Civic Virtue without Politics". You can then judge how good of an argument I have for my position and how good...

Re: Eisenhower's Virtues (Richard Dagger & Jason Brennan)

Kolya,

Many people would agree to everything I've said. Yet, for some reason, when people write about civic virtue, they seem to forget all of this.

Re: Eisenhower's Virtues (Richard Dagger & Jason Brennan)

Franco,

You keep writing as if Richard and I have never heard of Rousseau. In fact, Richard invokes Rousseau rather frequently in his book. I don't use Rousseau much for thinking about political...

Re: Eisenhower's Virtues (Richard Dagger & Jason Brennan)

Ledoc,

Not to be rude, but you don't know what you're talking about. Everyone basically defines "civic virtue" the same way. What they disagree about is not the definition, but what it takes to...

Re: Eisenhower's Virtues

Mike C: Why assume "doing the right thing" is equivalent to "doing the thing which in fact has the best consequences"? Every moral theory holds that the expected consequences of actions have some...

Re: Eisenhower's Virtues

Hi MikeC,

I can't speak for Richard, but I want to clarify what I meant about the importance of intention for virtue. Most moral theorists (including me) think that certain motivations are...
