You're right that this was the key reason for the switch. And it's not just the money. We never found a really good programmer to maintain the custom "bridge" between vBulletin and the videopage, so...

Florian was banned for 3 weeks for repeatedly insulting other commenters. Francoamerican was banned permanently for making an end run around the Florian banishment.

We're far more likely to notice, and remove, entire subthreads that have devolved into tedious back-and-forth insults of no relevance to the diavlog, like the "quintessential" one you're referring...
