It looks like the famous Corn Palace may soon go the way of the Dodo

Sad, to be sure -- and another example of the homogenization of the American landscape? Of course, there's something desperate about all of those braying signs that line the South Dakota landscape. VISIT ME! VISIT ME! WORLD'S LARGEST BALE OF HAY!! Only 498 miles to Wall Drug! They're clearly artificial tourist attractions -- yet what could be more Authentic Americana than that? A motelier in SD told me his parents used to see Lawrence Welk at the Corn Palace. The popcorn on sale there is delicious by the way.

Agreed. But there are some other cases which I am less saddened by; e.g.,

The owners of Holy Land USA have announced that the biblical theme park in Virginia will be auctioned off this month because of high operating costs and low attendance.

But weep not, young nikkibong! For there will be new and improved things for you to see!

Kentucky Governor Announces Plans To Build New Noah’s Ark

“FRANKFORT, Ky.— Governor Steve Beshear today joined the Ark Encounter LLC to announce the planned construction of a full-scale Noah’s Ark tourist attraction in northern Kentucky.” [...] This new theme park will also include “a replica of the Tower of Babel with exhibits, a 500-seat 5-D special effects theater, an aviary, and a first-century Middle Eastern village.”
And Praise God And Republican Jesus, this beautiful new attraction will show the beauty of private enterprise!

Quote:

Developers are seeking state tax incentives under the Kentucky Tourism Development Act. If they qualify — and Beshear indicated they would — they could receive as much as $37.5 million in incentives.

And because I know you were wondering, we can now confirm:

This means, if you live in Kentucky, your tax dollars will be supporting ... the teaching of Young Earth Creationism!
