But yeah, it's still pretty cool-looking, and unlike most other people, I loved the endless scene in the first Star Trek movie when they just showed the Enterprise.

If you're raising that as an objection ("not realistic"), I grant it, of course. However, I can accept it in light of special effects budget constraints.

From a pure aesthetics standpoint it's hard to beat this for general bad-assed-ness:

[added: yes I realize it's not technically a "ship]

I was afraid of that.

Well, if we are going to start bending the rules for what a ship is, the coolest thing imaginable is clearly the giant vacuum lady from Spaceballs

guys, guys, I think you all are missing the mark on what the greatest ship of all time means.

Star Trek the Motion Picture came out before I was born (1982 for me), but I remember the series on television syndication. And I remember the first time I saw the 1701 refit on the big screen.

I was PHYSICALLY shaking from the sight. I cannot describe the level of awe and wonder I felt surging through me at the time. I wish it was as easy nowadays for my jaded mind to feel that kind of wonder again as I did as a child, but the Enterprise did it.

Star Wars ships were ugly, hideous things. But the enterprise? Now THAT was a great ship.
