Of a sort, anyway! (Public intellectuals.)

I am late in passing along this Scott McLemee (http://www.artsjournal.com/quickstudy/2011/01/crimes_against_the_intellect.html) note, but it's too funny not to:

"Crimes Against the Intellect"

Last month, in France, playboy philosopher Bernard-Henri Levy was indicted for fraud, hucksterism, and general ridiculousness, and there will be a trial tomorrow. Sort of (http://www.counterpunch.org/tariq01272011.html).

Somehow I doubt this is going to affect his standing at The Huffington Post (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/bernardhenri-levy).

Poor BHL. Discredited in France for as long as I can remember, he now re-circulates himself in the US as an expert on everything.

It must have something to do with a book he wrote a little over a year ago in which he cited a "scholarly" study on Kant's "sexual life," which turned out to be a canular, a hoax written by a French academic under a pseudonym. When you make a mistake like that, the only future left for you is in America.

Thank you for acknowledging the superiority of the American instinct to embrace forgiveness and redemption, and to shun the equating a single blunder with the deserving of a life sentence.

;)

(Yes, yes, there are about nine different ways you could rip that to shreds.)

But didn't Scott Fitzgerald say that there were no second acts in American lives? (One down, eight to go)

Aren't you forgetting that France is by tradition a Catholic country? All sinners are welcome, and all will be forgiven, including sinners against the intellect. In any case, I have no doubt that BHL will be pontificating on French teevee for a long time yet, excoriating French intellectuals for being insufficiently pro-American.

But didn't Scott Fitzgerald say ...

Eh, F. Scott Fitzgerald is Old America.

Cat fight (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/02/08/donald-rumsfeld-john-mcca_n_820152.html)!

In his new memoir Known and Unknown, Rumsfeld describes (http://thehill.com/news-by-subject/defense-homeland-security/142623-in-new-book-rumsfeld-knows-best) the Republican lawmaker as "a man with a hair-trigger temper and a propensity to fashion and shift his positions to appeal to the media."

After the harsh characterization was leaked (http://politicalwire.com/archives/2011/02/02/rumsfeld_lashes_out.html) prior to the book's release, McCain hit back at Rumsfeld during an appearance (http://blogs.abcnews.com/george/2011/02/sen-john-mccain-fires-back-at-donald-rumsfeld-memoir-thank-god-he-was-relieved-of-his-duties.html#tp) on [Good Morning America].

"Thank God he was relieved of his duties," the Arizona senator said.
