If there are any francophiles out there, tomorrow is "Bastille Day." This scene from Casablanca always brings tears to my unsentimental eyes.

Despite being an "American hick" I feel pretty much the same way as Florian about that scene. (Also, unrelatedly, I think the "What watch?" scene in the same movie is extremely sweet and kind of sad. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Th0G8rkhBqg) For non-auteur studio hack Curtiz was nevertheless often a magnificent director.

Happy Bastille day.

Happy Bastille day.

Thank you. I have never considered you a hick. Yes, the "what watch" scene is drole. Casablanca, for those too young to know (most of the people who post here), is one of the masterpieces of American cinema. I think I have watched it more often than any other film.

Happy Batille Day, Florian!

Merci, ma chère océan. Et vive la liberté, l'égalité et la fraternité.

Merci, ma chère océan.

Il n'y a pas de quoi.

Et vive la liberté, l'égalité et la fraternité.

Where did I hear that before? ;)

Despite my putatively skimpy grasp of history, allow me to wish you a happy Bastille Day. :)

Merci. Vous êtes rentré dans mes bonnes grâces.

The gods rained on the parade down the Champs-Elysées this morning. They must not like Sarkozy any more than 60% of the electorate.

I once used Bastille Day to pick up a girl at a bar. Guessing nobody had wished her a Happy Bastille Day... I turned to her and was like, "Has anyone wished you a Happy Bastille Day... no, well Happy Bastille Day". Boom... conversation started.

Merci France!

I have a fervent hope that this happened in, say, mid-February.

Of course not, I don't play with girls' minds. :)

No one says "Bastille Day" in France. Were you picking up a Russian prostitute by chance?

No one says "Bastille Day" in France.

Of course, but I speak English... as did the girl. :)
