Hello Blogging Heads Community,

I am a longtime BH viewer/lurker. I am also a designer. I just sent the fine folks at BH a new logo and homepage design. I thought it was time for an upgrade, so I took matters into my own hands, unsolicited and unpaid.

The current logo is kitchscy, it's silly, it is slightly adorable, and a little bit endearing. However, in my humble opinion, it does a very bad job of representing the sophisticated content on Blogging Heads. The new logo represents Blogging Heads' opposing viewpoints, wealth of content, nuanced opinions, and digital distribution. Check out the logo (http://getblankspace.com/clients/bh/logo.html) and the home page (http://getblankspace.com/clients/bh/site.html).

Since the comment community is such a key part of BH, I wanted to give you the opportunity to comment on the designs. Applaud it or shred it, I am interested in your opinions.

If you want to know more about me and my small design company go to GetBlankSpace.com (http://getblankspace.com).

Cheers,
Rakemyleaves

Rake-

Speaking as someone who is very partial to the kitchy, old-school logo, which has a really humble charm, I like this one a lot. Feels very web 2 (3?) point you - without being overbearing. Good work.

However, I took the liberty of making one small improvement. I hope that Bob takes note.

Take a look at the attached photo, for the perfect bhtv redesign.

Cool. I'm torn on the logo. I like the dot-matrix look but the different shades make my eye miss the "BH" (especially the B) at first which is cool artistically but not sure if that's good for something you want recognizable. As far as the page design, I like it except that I kindof like having the segment topic links spelled out without the reader having to hover the mouse over them. Yours is a cool way of making it look more modern but I know I have several times been attracted to click on a topic for a diavlog I wasn't even gonna necesarrily watch, just because I read the clever name for a given segment. But these are hair-splitting comments on my part and all-in-all I think your design is cool. Also, keep in mind that I tend to be the cantankarous afraid-of-change type that raised a fuss when they decided to ditch the REALLY low-fi original design, so I wouldn't put much stock in my critiques. Thanks for putting your time into it. I'll be interested to see if the BH overlords implement any/all of your designs.

PS in a tangential note, I'm currently reading "Consciousness Explained" by Dan Dennett and just read the parts about color phi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_Phi_phenomenon), so your logo moved me, so to speak.

Respectfully I don't like it so much. I can hardly tell the B is a B. The web page design is not bad though, I just think the logo lacks some sharpness. I'm with you on your concept though. I prefer minimalist design to kitsch as well. Bh.tv kitsch ain't too bad though.

Thanks for the feedback. For the logo, from my perspective the 'BH' reading later is a feature not a bug. I was attempting to convey the conceptual points first and the acronym second.

Your point about the topic names is a good one. I have also been drawn in by a segment title. I was trying to make the pacing of the diavlog topics more apparent. Maybe there is a way to reconcile those points.

Thanks for the encouragement. Whether anything is implemented or not I'll still enjoy the site and it was a good exercise. The Phi stuff is pretty cool:)

Thanks for the feedback. I kind of intended the BH to be secondary to the color and squares, but maybe it is too secondary. The BH.tv kitsch is endearing, especially now that I have been watching for awhile. However, when I first came to the site I really felt there was a disconnect between the content and design.

You're welcome. It's great when commentors supply some creativity to trying to make a great site even better.

On the logo, I actually like the fact that it's not obvious, I was just saying that I could see from a branding perspective why someone might use the critique I cited.

I highly recommend the Dennett book if you like stuff like the color phi phenomenon. Fascinating stuff.

I think the logo should remain some kind of icon and not lettering, logos usually have more character to them. Personally I am fond of this logo, very "warm"
