I'm inclined to think Chicago will get it, but Rio deserves it more perhaps since no South American city has ever hosted the games before (kind of amazing). Obama had to go though. He shouldn't be blamed if Chicago loses out.

look, how can we disagregate the impact of Obama's visit from what the IOC was going to decide anyway?

That is to say, Chicago looked like a favorite even before Obama agreed to go to Copenhagen. (Postscript: I'm so jealous that he gets to go to La Belle Denmark tonight...)

I'd vote but there's no "I Have No Clue" option!

You can't. The bidding is closed and the vote is forthcoming.

From your first link:

In recent days, Fox News hosts, contributors and guests have used President Obama's promotion of the United States bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics in Chicago as an excuse to attack him, while Michelle Malkin and Matt Drudge have baselessly linked the murder of a teenager in Chicago to the Olympic bid.

I'd ask two things.

1. Would Fox News, Malkkkin and Drudge be howling the same howl if it were George W. Bush trying to secure the Olympics for Dallas?

2. Why does the above blockquote sound so familiar (http://bloggingheads.tv/forum/showthread.php?p=131747#post131747)?

I wonder if you would have gotten more votes, either way, if you made the poll anonymous.

(I like the nonymous kind better, myself. I only did not vote in this one because I truly haven't the foggiest. Next time plz has choiz C.)

If only there were an "I hope not" button.
I love Chicago, everyone should come here, Olympics or not, but I'm just sick of the mayor's grandiose plans and fixation on making Chicago a "world city". Corruption is inevitably going to jam things up and then everyone's going to start going on and on again about "Chicago-style politics" and "Chicago thugs" and it gets old. (At least if people use the term "Chicago-style politics", they should use it more accurately. Rush Limbaugh & co. have been using it as a synonym for "intimidation", but it's really more like bribery and nepotism and back room deals. You know, buying someone's vote for a beer.)

Ultimately I voted that Chicago wouldn't get the games, but I'm shocked Chicago was eliminated in the first round. How the heck could hyper diverse Madrid still be in there? Barcelona just had the Games.

Rio better win this or the U.S. should boycott (just kidding).

Then-Senator Obama told the bouyant hometown crowd that `In 2016, I'll be wrapping up my second term as president, so I can't think of a better way than to be marching into Washington Park alongside Mayor Daley, alongside Rahm Emmanuel, alongside Dick Durbin, alongside Valerie Jarrett, as president of the United States and announcing to the world, Let the games begin!'"

Soon after inauguration, Jarrett got an ethics waiver, allowing her to lead the White House lobbying for the Olympic Chicago bid. David Axelrod was the recipient of the major PR contract from the $43 million Chicago Olympic Bid Committee. All the Chicago real estate backers of Obama's campaign, including campaign finance co-chair Penny Pritzker, stood to make out like bandits if Chicago got the bid. You can fill in the blanks...

Hmmm ... a comment on some blog somewhere, with no links. We should trust it unquestioningly!

And also, look at this outrage, POSTED ARROGANTLY ON WHITEHOUSE.GOV, setting: the Union League Club of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois, no less!!!1!.

THE PRESIDENT: I want to thank the members of the 2016 Chicago bid to get the Olympics. Listen, Mr. Mayor, you and your committee have put together a great plan. It's a plan that will make America proud.

They say that the Olympics will come to Chicago if we're fortunate enough to be selected, but really it's coming to America, and I can't think of a better city to represent the United States than Chicago.

This is a well thought out venue. There will be -- the athletes will be taken care of. People who will be coming from around the world will find this good city has got fantastic accommodations, great restaurants. It will be safe.

And so I -- this country supports your bid, strongly. And our hope is that the judges will take a good look at Chicago and select Chicago for the 2016 Olympics.

Thank you all.

Wait ... What (http://georgewbush-whitehouse.archives.gov/news/releases/2008/01/20080107-3.html)?

Obama's a politician, see:

Just to underscore your point: NBC Chicago reported on Obama's role recently, noting, "In a surprise appearance at an Olympic-bid rally in [Washington] park last year, only days after clinching the Democratic presidential nomination, Obama outlined a dream scenario for him and his Chicago allies.
