Not nearly enough viral video going on in this dork-filled wasteland (that's supposed to be sarcasm....anyone ever thought of doing mp3 audio posts in place of/combined with text for forums? or has that been done? or is that just a stupid idea? there's so much time spent on here ensuring someone interprets your "tone" correctly maybe that could augment your post. then we could actually yell at each other! anyway here's some virals (to me, that doesn't necessarily mean popular, 60 minutes is just as viral worthy in my eyes):

....anyone ever thought of doing mp3 audio posts in place of/combined with text for forums? or has that been done? or is that just a stupid idea? there's so much time spent on here ensuring someone interprets your "tone" correctly maybe that could augment your post.

Some time ago, one of the commenters recorded and made available a video response to one of the diavlogs. It provoked a pretty good discussion. I came down on the text-is-best side, and I'm still firmly there. Here are my two main reasons.

First: generally, it is much more efficient to read text than it is to listen to audio, just on a pure word/minute basis. Add to that the ease with which one can re-read a difficult passage and skim over other parts, and multiply that by the number of posts that one potentially faces.

Second: I am a big believer in the school that says the written word is the best way to communicate a complex idea. The effort of having to write it out adds focus, precision, and succinctness. Indeed, just the process of writing it out helps clarify one's own understanding, never mind the readers'. Seems to me that most recorded comments would have to be written out first to avoid meandering -- if you've ever come home to fifteen messages on your voice mail, you know what I mean -- and if you buy my claim that prep work is going to be required, then I'll point to the first reason and say, "Just let me read your notes."

However, you do make a fair point about the difficulty of conveying tone via the written word. For myself, I like the challenge of working within the constraints, but others might not.

As I think I ended up saying the last time this topic was discussed, I encourage those who are interested to give it a shot. I just don't think I'm going to participate, even as an audience member ...

then we could actually yell at each other!

... and that'd be another reason why.

Thanks, dad!

good points. i guess i could've solved that one myself if i had just remembered that i normally skip through about 95% of any diavlog by clicking on the categories under the video due to lack of interest/repeat discussions/meandering. that's one reason i don't use the Diane Rehm archive on the net: it just isn't efficient. oh well!

if anyone else finds good stuff go ahead and post it!
