Awesome!

And the post is worth reading, especially for conservatives still in possession of their mental faculties. This endless slide by the GOP can only be stopped by you.

Heh. The Republicans' ingeniuous idea to rebrand the "Democrat" Party as the "Democrat Socialist Party" (which actually might have some positive influence on it), reminds me of this post by Atrios:

Probably Could Make Kitten Killing Popular

It is interesting, as Harold Meyerson notes (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/04/14/AR2009041402556.html?hpid%3Dopinionsbox1&sub=AR), that the Right's linking of Obama to socialism will just succeed in making the latter popular.

Like many commonly used words in our political discourse, "socialism" isn't very well-defined. If the Right defines it as Obamaism, then we may yet get our government health and SUPERTRAINS. People like the skinny black guy.

It's also instructive that the Republican Dumbass Party (doing some rebranding of my own) can't think of any better way to rebuild itself other than calling Democats "socialist" or "fascist (http://www.sadlyno.com/archives/19972.html)."

We're lucky: Our opponents are really stupid. And they seem to be getting stupider.

Hmmm.... maybe we really are poisoning them with Chemtrails!!! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ooo5-LenaA0&feature=channel_page) As our militia friend in the attached video observes, "they are really stepping up" the chemtrail activity!!!1!

UPDATE: LOL, one of the tags on this video is "Michelle Obama." Evidently Barack put Michelle in charge of FEMA's chemtrail program. http://www.spartantailgate.com/forums/images/smilies/lol.gif

Chem trails. Sigh.

You know, I've heard of this conspiracy theory before, but I could never really accept that anyone permitted to leave the rubber room actually held this belief.

On another note, I trace the positive (or at least non-negative) connotations of the word socialism to Jay Bulworth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6ag_2dg8nI).

(alt. link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6ag_2dg8nI#t=2m45s) for the impatient) -- thx, Twin!

Yeah. The first time I heard it, I just randomly stumbled across one video by one guy, and I thought it was literally his own personal excentricity. I left a couple comments, "you know, those are CONTRAILS." Imagine my surprise when I was flooded with responses by other commenters telling me I was delusional, and needed to "wake up."

The chemtrail thing is now a staple of the "patriot" movement and far-right conspiracy mongering, with a stunning number of adherents. Just search YouTube for "chemtrails" to get a sense of the scope.

Google hits for chemtrail: 1,090,000
YouTube videos about chemtrails: 34,800

Probably the most well-known proponent of the theory is the Alex Jones, a paleoconservative, radio talk show host, and conspiracy monger. From Texas, natch.

A full-on crackpot friend of my told me about the chemtrail thing years ago. When I got back home I googled it, and there was less than 100 hits on it. I figured it must be some kind of talk radio / Art Bell deal. Judging from google insights it must have been before 2004.

I originally heard this about 8 or 10 years ago from a hard-core lefty conspiracy theorist.

once you go far enough either way the nuts from both sides seem to converge on some middle ground of nuttiness where you really can't tell if they were originally leftish, rightish, or just started out in the middle of nutty-ville.

I agree. For a lot of these poor saps, whether they come off as far-left kooks or far-right kooks depends on who's in power; the paranoia is more about The Government than it is about whichever party is in the majority. And, for a lot of them, our government doesn't matter so much in any case, since it is viewed as a puppet of the real power in the world, be it the Trilateral Commission, the Bilderberg Group, the Carlyle Group, or just the even more NWO. (Maybe the last is fashionable lately because it's easiest to type?)

I note, for example, that the 9/11 Truthers started out viewed as a bunch of crazy lefties. That appears to be ever less the case. Whether it's because they never really were, or it's related to Bush becoming less popular across the political spectrum, or what, it's hard to say, but it is clear these days that the Truthers are far from just hippies gone round the bend. Note that the YouTube channel page for the chemtrail "militia" guy Twin linked to also shows him to be a Truther.

Another way that I have long visualized this, and not just for the out and out kooks, is that the political spectrum is not a straight line labeled Left at one end and Right at the other. I think of it, instead, as having the shape of a slightly squashed capital omega: Ω

Most people live somewhere along the top (in the shaded area in the attached sketch). When we're zoomed in on that portion, the spectrum looks like a straight line, but when we pull back far enough to see the entire population, we see the real extremes first diverging ever farther apart, but ultimately converging to the point where they're practically touching. Certainly, despite the labels we use, there has been little practical difference between Communist and Fascist dictatorships, and it seems to me the same applies to the most extremist individuals, too.
