Imported from Italy, with fancy silver Gancini buckles. What an effete elitist faggot liberal! This will be all over cable news by sundown.

Conservatives: Are you drooling yet? Dreaming about how this juicy tidbit, er, very important story will be used by the media to delegitimize Barack Obama? To prove how he is out of touch with the struggles of your humble existence?

Sorry, my mistake, those aren't Obama's fancy shoes. They're McCain's (http://www.thenation.com/blogs/jstreet/340726/let_s_play_if_i_were_a_right_wing_blogger).

Christopher Hayes:

Let's Play: If I Were a Right Wing Blogger

If I were a right-wing blogger, and I found out that Barack Obama was wearing Ferragamo loafers that cost $520 (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/isabel-wilkinson/a-week-in-john-mccains-sh_b_115692.html), I would spend about 50% of my waking hours making sure everyone knew this. I would mock him for being an out-of-touch elitist and make jokes like, "If you think that's a lot, you should see how much his purse costs " I would send the link to Drudge and wait for Instapundit to pick it up, and then watch gleefully as Fox News ran segments about how Barack Obama's $500 loafers vitiate his entire economic platform.

But of course, I'm not a right-wing blogger. And the $520 shoes belong to John McCain. And frankly, I don't think how much his shoes cost matters one whit for how he'd govern the country.

Atrios (http://www.eschatonblog.com/2008_07_27_archive.html#1053223613546380666):

While Obama's consumption of orange juice at breakfast was proof he was deeply out of touch with normal America, John McCain's $500 shoes are further proof that he is indeed a man of the people with whom most people would want to BBQ with. Except they wouldn't (http://www.suntimes.com/news/politics/obama/1035588,bbq070208.article).

These zombie narratives (Democrats are out of touch, effete, elitist, and Republicans are rugged men of the people) are so ingrained that no amount of facts or reality can stop the bobbleheads from repeating them.

You are being unkind to the elderly again.
Don't try to distract with the fancy eye-taliano name and reference to the buckle. All old people wear orthopedic shoes... which are designed for comfort not style. You are employing class warfare and ageism to mock an elderly gents shoes. While my grandad's orthos didn't cost that much, he wasn't on his feet all day campaigning. Cut the guy some slack.
For the aged, footwear and sun protection are critical. Now when is he gonna lose the goofy ball cap and get himself fitted for a Borsalino?

The takeaway from those articles is that McCain's headgear really out to be a cowboy hat.

Just another thing to add to the list of Things Ruined By Bush.

What else is on the list?
I can only think of clearing brush and playing golf while the troops are in harms way.

Other things ruined by Bush:

Playing the guitar (http://images.google.com/images?q=bush+guitar), dancing (http://images.google.com/images?q=bush+dancing), giving backrubs (http://images.google.com/images?q=bush+backrub), liking chimpanzees (http://images.google.com/images?q=bush+chimp), the phrases mission accomplished (http://www.google.com/search?q=mission+accomplished) and heckuva job (http://www.google.com/search?q=heckuva+job), the words healthy (http://www.sierraclub.org/forests/fires/healthyforests_initiative.asp), clear (http://www.sierraclub.org/cleanair/clear_skies.asp), compassion (http://bjkeefe.blogspot.com/2007/10/thought-for-day-2007-10-07.html), and patriot (http://www.slate.com/id/2087984/), among others (http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Bush_administration_Orwellian_logi c).

Oh, and the Army, the National Guard, the US budget, economy, and image abroad, the separation of powers, the respect for science, and the self-confidence of the American people.

Just to name a few.

And, what about that airplane?

I'm glad I didn't contribute to the campaign for that! I'd be paying green credits to Al Gore for years to offset that!
