Yes indeed. I raise a virtual glass of champagne westward.

Cheers to California!

Yet, I dread this could be an issue that derails the general election into a mudslinging match and just might force social conservatives to come out to vote for the last favorable soundbite. A bad week in Iraq and this issue could make the last months of the election sheer torture and an embarrassing spectacle, with no gains for the bread and buttr issues and deeper debates on foreign policy, energy, and the environment.

How long until SCOTUS reacts? How long until the US military feels the love?

Three cheers for California, the second most progressive state in the Union!

Baltimoron's concerns are of course worries for me too, but it's got to be very hard for most people not to be touched (some in spite of themselves) by the sight of many of these ceremonies. It's got to be really hard to look at those 80 year-old lesbians finally getting a chance to marry and feel deeply threatened. And the experience of Massachusetts strongly suggests that states that allow gay marriage don't slide into the ocean or anything.

Obama's appeal to federalism ought to help too.
