If you check the daily birthdays, there are a couple of users whose dates of birth seem to track the current day. Each of them has pm info and prescription drug advertisements.

By name groverblue (http://bloggingheads.tv/forum/member.php?u=4457), and kru1e (http://bloggingheads.tv/forum/member.php?u=4716).

I may be obsessive about these things (No!) - but these guys (actually, I'm betting singular "guy") are still here. Their sigs are typical prescription drug spam text and they use the birthday mechanism of the forum software to keep links up on the main forum page. It's not my business, and it's only a small thing, but I hate to see spammers co-opt good media.

Ok, I feel better now.

Thanks Pisc. I hope the BHTV powers-that-be take notice before spam becomes a significant problem for this site.

I've posted this just to knock some apparently malicious spam off the homepage.

Should we get some courtesy gift each time we do this? Or is it purely self serving?

LOL. right now if you look at who's online, there are about 4 spam accounts busy creating new threads.

Sometimes this behavior is done with bots, and can be stopped by requiring a CAPTCHA to be deciphered during registration.

Might be something for the BHTV overlords to think about.

Barring that, they need to grant moderator privileges to some of the trustworthy regulars so these weeds can be yanked immediatley.

Twin is exactly right. A CAPTCHA would be a good measure, here. I have to say that despite working unofficially trying to filter the SPAM posts, I'm not suggesting that I'm looking for any new privileges. I do think we can, as a community, keep our eyes open and try to keep the crap off the homepage.

Oh, I didn't realize there was any real content in this thread....

We do use a CAPTCHA, actually, although it's not set to the highest difficulty setting. I've been reluctant to do that, because I hate those damn things! Maybe I'll trying bumping it up and see if that helps....

Thanks again, everyone.

Thanks for the update. It's a great relief not seeing spam all over the place. A forum cluttered with spam has the feel of a park with trash blowing all around. It makes it a less pleasant place to hang out. It won't drive me away, but I'm afraid what it will do to other casual visitors.

Having regular posters participate as moderators (as opposed to administrators) is a standard practice on busy forums like these, and in my opinion it's something you should consider. Between a handful of regulars, I think we could keep an eye on the site pretty much 24-7.

And of course you could yank those privileges from anyone who abused them. But I don't think that would happen.

Oh, I've been waiting for long to respond. As soon as a suspicious post showed up, here I am with my answer.

I live in the Ocean most of the time. The ocean is not that far from where I live.

How about that?
